Here's a little more info on the Car-15 copy of the weapon used by Russian agent "Surf" in the Miami Vice episode entitled "Bushido". My CAR-15 is an NFA registered SBR. Unlike the CAR-15 in the Miami Vice episode, my CAR-15 has an XM-177 flash hider rather than a birdcage flash hider. The gun uses an MGW 90 round "drum" magazine with a clear acrylic back to view the round count. It has a two position metal acetate covered adjustable stock.
This was pretty cutting edge in 1984 and as you can see in the video, works pretty well. I built the Laser sight. Externally, it is a copy of the period Laser Products Corporation sight. Here is a video of me engaging targets, in late daylight, at about 35 yards using only the Laser. It's interesting how that when the Laser hit the white paint, the energy was reflected showing up very well. When the Laser hit the red paint, it's energy was absorbed resulting in a diminished visibility.

"I don't know but the finish and threads(?) look like shit...amateurish. Probably dangerous to bystanders.
More like a weak pipe bomb, from the looks of it."

Sorry, it had to be done 🤣

Awesome build, as per usual! Out of curiosity, do you have an XM177E2 in your collection (since you mentioned the flash hider on this rifle)?

Not like that's anything obscure or ...you know....random ?

Admit it, the only way you could ever have gotten the idea was to image search for a stubby CAR and try really hard to find that shit.
I mean 1 episode of a TV series that's been dead for at least 35 years has to be referred to as reaching, doesn't it ?

I probably would have looked into either Rambo or maybe Lone Wolf Mcquaide (sp?) myself....but that's just me.
Maybe Predator had one in it ?

Honestly not trying to harsh your gig or anything, but it just hit me as .....wait......what the ever loving fuck ? ! ?
It's like re-creating the old suitcase cellphone yanno ?

It is a cool pew pew though.

Clearly you spent your youth watching Ally McBeal and you probably cried when Gary from 30-Something died.

The rest of us think this is awesome!

I know I watched that episode live first run before heading to a 60-keg party in upstate New York and said “ gonna have one of those someday.”

And not talking about the Cadillac.

But by all means tell us about how you really wanted to wear Susan Deys giant shoulder pads pant suit form LA Law…. While the rest of us were groovin on cool guns from Vice!

    Sirhr

PS. Still want a Bren 10!

Love the xm-177, CAR-15, gAU 5A/A, and all the variants. I've built several, all NFA registered where appropriate. I especially have a fondness and connection to the Son Tay raid.

Miami Vice was the coolest "gun show" on TV then and maybe forever. I've bought/built many guns because of Miami Vice.

Since it's NFA registered due to the short barrel, was it not also designed to be "Full Auto" as well? I thought I recall the Miami Vice replica being full auto.....

Now, you wanna talk about a "bad ass" Miami Vice Full auto, there is Jim Zubiena's machine gun used in part 1 of "Calderone's Return..." I believe, in an interview, Jim stated it was from his personal collection. Skip to 2:30 for the firefight. Or watch the whole thing and listen to a good cover of "In the night" and some bad ass handling of the fake Daytona Spider.

    ^^^ Guns, cars and irony.....

    Miami Vice remains groundbreaking.

And you know how many giant stars it launched? Struggling actors who had bit parts... who ended up as icons in the past 40 years?

Yes, this fall, Miami Vice will be 40 years old. Still incredible!

The first, and most famous one, in my judgement, would be Bruce Willis...

    How about 'Coach?"

How about a young Liam Neeson?

    Ben Stiller.

    Steve Buscemi

    Julia Roberts

Lawrence Fishburn (Though he had been in Apocalypse now, IIRC).

John Turturro... Penn and Teller... And

    R. Lee Ermey... (he was in Boys from Company C and also Apocalypse Now... but MV put him on the map bigtime.

    Cheers,

Bruce was the "first," as stated above. His episode, "No Exit" was very early in Sesason 1, right after Castillo was introduced.

John Turturro played the high end "escort service" owner in the last ep. of the 1st season which also guest starred Pam Grier.

But, yes, there are others, including:

    Ned Eisenberg (who played Librizzi)
    Dennis Farina (Albert Lombard)
John Leguizamo (Orlando Calderone - Original Calderone's son).

Just to name a few. There are tons.

I didn't remember R. Lee Ermey being in Miami Vice, but sure enough he was in one episode as Det. Ernie Haskell.

    Yup...

What other show launched so many legends?

Was it campy? In some ways. But in 1984 when I was an impressionable teen... fuck this was the coolest thing ever. We NEVER went out on Friday night before Miami Vice was over. Ever.

So many amazing moments. There were some other 'shows' that had a big impact for me as a kid. Hill St. Blues. Magnum and Simon & Simon. So much right and wrong. Black and white with... a bit of gray. (Did you see the Sunset?). But Miami Vice was like finishing school for '70's and '80's kids.

I attended a private HS for my junior and senior year. They were all "thespians" of some sort and encouraged drama in all aspects. When CBS would rerun movies like "West Side Story" on TV, the next day you'd hear groups of kids "snapping fingers" all around the corridors, etc. Could be worse, though, it could have been "Deliverance!" (SQUEEEEEAALLL)! :ROFLMAO: Star Trek TOS was a big one where people would walk around pretending to be various Star Trek characters, etc. and speak/write in Star Trek terms.

I graduated in the mid 70's. As I look back on that time, I can't even imagine what we at that school could have done with Miami Vice. And these kids were wealthy enough actually to own some of those cars.... and some did!

When I was a kid shoveling shit on a horse farm in VT... I vowed that I would have a Rolls-Royce before I was 30...

I made it by 3 months. It was not a great one. It was cheap. It was almost 20 years old. But it was in great shape. It had almost no miles. And it was mine. Made quite an impression (not always a good one) driving into 'places; in a Rolls-Royce as a kid. A real kid. I maintained it myself... which was not hard. But not easy.

But Miami Vice and Scarface impacted that.. goal.

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

Willie Nelson as a Texas Ranger. Probably their best story line. Plus Steve Buscemi.

Yup.... Absolutely. And their use of BonJovi's "Dead or Alive" to introduce the character. Even the young under cover (at the beginning) who had the "Long Horn Pete" cab was cool.

Then again, their use of music could be a whole 'nother thread. After all, the show was born when someone passed a note to another that said, "MTV Cops." They even had "Uncle Ted" on the show, both in a guest star tole ("Definitely Miami") and singing his song, "Little Miss Dangerous," which was encased in its own episode with the same name... same as Glen Frey's "Smuggler's Blues..." which, oddly enough, the episode being written by Miguel Pinero, the original "Calderone."

Without a doubt the use of music was core to that show...

So much amazing music underscored the plots.

    Another level of brilliance!
