Rifle Scopes mil/mil FFP $2000 options

Hey guys

I want to make sure I'm researching all the options available. I am reading everything I can on mil/mil FFP variable mag scopes with a max magnification value of at least 18 and no more than 24. Budget is around 2k and I'd like to be able to reach out to 1000 yards someday (bench rest). This scope will go on a 20" POF .308 AR. Am I missing any on my list: (ranked by me in most scope for money IMO)

1) IOR 3-18x50 (winner from what I've read on the hide)
2) Nightforce 5.5-22x50/56
3) Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 Scope
4) IOR 6-24x56 (ranked lower because of need for high rings which I may be unnecessarily afraid of)
5) Viper PST (All I know about this scope is that its not available yet and a lot of people are waiting for one - is it even FFP mil/mil?)
6) Bushnell 6-24x50mm Elite 4200 Riflescope (ranked lower due to glass quality)


I already have the weaver grand slam 3-10x scope that LL reviewed and it's pretty nice. I'll be using that while I make the decision to go to one of the above scopes.

I have never looked through or even held any of the scopes on that list. All my observations have been from what I have read on this forum. I'm not asking for someone to pick a scope for me, just asking if I am missing any other options for the price range and features.

Well the NF 22x isnt a FFP but thats still what id go with out of all of those options.

Doh you're right Savage. I was thinking of the 3.5-15x. I really wish I could see what 15x looked like at 1000 yards.

Its plenty, and Ive shot out to 1150 with it. whenever Im shooting my buddies S&b 5x25'sor 22x nightforce I always turn it down to 15x, thats the ideal power in my eyes for anything out to 1300yds. I personally have no regrets on my NF 3.5x15 and I strongly dislike any power over 16, I like having a wide FOV. easier to spot misses when you can see the surrounding area and not only your target

The Viper PST is available in a FFP mil/mil but there's a lot of people frustrated with being w/o a scope all season that was supposed to be shipped at the beginning. I was one of those people wanting to buy one but I've moved onto other things. I actually just took delivery of the IOR 18x optic in your list and am pretty happy with my initial first-hand observations. I haven't even been able to mount it yet let alone shoot it but I've got high hopes. Only time will tell.

The top three for me would be:

1. IOR 3.5-18x50
2. Vortex Razor 5-20x50
3. ND 3.5-15x50 F1

Assuming you are buying new and need rings, the vortex and NF are closely matched in pricing.

The NF is $2290 but includes a set of NF ultralight rings.

The vortex needs 35mm rings and assuming you get vortex razor hd rings, they're another $200 + $2000 for the scope.

If on a budget, the IOR is the cheapest. Contact scott @ libertyoptics for best pricing... It's a very good price even when compared to buying the razor used.

I have the NF 3.5-15x SFP mounted on a TRG-22 and feel it's a great magnification range for shooting steel plate out to 1000-yards. Now if you plan on shooting paper, I'd go with a higher magnification.

Are you looking for a scope that will primarily be used for BR ? Unless I am reading between the lines, I would say you would do better with the NF in SFP, thinner reticle at higher magnifications. A FFP reticle is the ticket for ranging, generally larger targets, but will cover the entire X ring on a F class or BR target in the upper magnification ranges with the thicker reticle.

My Leupold M4 6.5-20 FFP M5 should be here tomorrow. It was under 2K. I'll give you a rough when I get my paws on it and mount it tomorrow night.

Yeah, I was lost on the "bench rest" comment. I think it refers to shooting to 1000 off of a bench, not 1000yd BR.

Aubie, if you keep your eyes peeled US Optics SN3's pop up in that price range. That would definitely be worth looking into. There's a 3.2-17 fully loaded with GenII XR reticle right now for $2299:

Regarding Savag110's FOV and spotting misses comments-most 25X scopes still have 10mil+ FOV, so unless you plan on missing by more than 15-20ft its not an issue. Once again he's trying to build an "internet reputation" based on repeating what he infers from posts rather than actual experience.

You'll find even more FOV each side at lower powers, and having a little extra magnification and dialing back is easier than wanting a little more and not being able to get it. Plus most scopes' have their best optical performance at under their max magnification, so all around his advice has holes in it....

I'm not sold on the NF F1, I've seen a sudden lack of them on the line at precision comps. There were a lot last year, and its kinda slipped a little. I saw a new NF with their "improved" turrets pop more than one shot a full rev off (and the guy still beat me by 2pts in Utah damnit!)...

Sorry if I confused anyone by the bench rest comment. I thought it meant firing from a bench.

Thanks for all the advice. Now I think I'm in worse shape though. I thought I wanted an FFP out to 24+ magnification but now I'm not so sure...Why can't picking a scope be easy??

I'll keep an eye on those USO scopes. The name generally scares me though because everytime I go to the website I see the 3k+ price tags. I'm just not willing to spend quite that much. Maybe when I've gotten a little long range shooting under my belt I'll give em a shot. Thanks again.

I thing waiting until you know what you really want/need is ALWAYS the best idea for someone getting into this <span style="text-decoration: line-through">crack-like account draining addiction</span> hobby.

Get a rifle that will shoot sub moa (off the shelf Remington SPS or a Savage), drop it in a stock that fits you if the factory one doesn't. Then get a good base and rings. Get a scope that is reliable and repeatable (save the clarity/wizzbang/internet cock measuring devices for later), and get a case of good ammo. Spend the savings on some good training, and attend some precision rifle comps.
You learn what you really want/need and what is fluff in a hurry, and you will learn way more about you and your rifle than years by yourself shooting from a bench.

Chiller called the ace of spades.

I went from NF NXS with NPR1 to USO SN3 to Vortex HD and Trijicon. For some reason I miss my NF, but I am more than happy with the Razor HD and don't regret my decision(s).

Hands-on is the only way to go, and made the decisions easy/easier.

(get the Seekins plain 35mm rings from Scotty at LO, or Seekins for $129 or so.......).

I have handled a Hensoldt or two and they are nice and friendly. Or, wait for an Christmas gift from someone selling a SB due to money needs.....

15x on top is plenty of mag to shoot 1K.
Im of the thought that if you cant hit it with 15x, 25x isnt going to help.

2nd on the USO. I picked one up for that with 35mm tube, ill, #3 mil knobs and every other option availibe and a set of USO rings. I love it.

Oh great post.I hope the OP doesn't mind me piggybacking onto his post, but it is very similar in nature. I am in the same situation, and was looking at the NF F1, and the Razor for my custom Rem700 keeping my budget around the $2k mark. My question was do I up my budget another 500-700 and get into a S&B, USO or Premier? Looking for a scope for punching paper, ringing steel at all different ranges, and maybe do some classes with. I really have one shot at throwing this kinda cash at some glass so I want to spend my money wisely. With kids in my near future and the house needing some remodeling I am looking for one great scope and get into reloading to bring my ammo costs down. Once this money is spent, I don't see my wife letting me $pend this kind of cash anytime soon.

$2-300 is easy to hide but the challenge is hiding $2-3k.

While I'm an advocate of FFP scopes if you're mainly going to be punching paper you're better off buying a SFP scope. Remember FFP reticules increase in size as you dial up the magnification.

After using my Falcon FFP I don't have a problem with the reticle and zoom. I will definitely look into what reticle I choose when picking up a FFP scope and see its size range so I know if it will be usable on the lower end of the zoom. I do like the mil hash based reticles over the mildots. I will build up a USO and see where I come out with costs.

I just received my Leupold 4.5-14X 50 w/m5 turret today as well no range time with it as of yet but have it mounted and I really like it so far. The new m5 turret is the best turret Leupold has built nice solid clicks. I went with the Mil dot because I do a lot of target shooting and I like the not so busy look of the mil dot. I have almost 36 Mils of Elevation which is good because I do not have an elevated base. Seems pretty solid and I picked it up for less than $1000 shipped brand new.
