Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question—Is the mil turret/mil-dot reticle an out dated system? Would the above reticle in a 4-14 FFP, and the “mild-dot-master” be a contender in today’s world or a relic of the past?

Thanks for the feed back. If they are still being ran in Lowlight’s courses I guess they're still relevant. 😅. Feels kind of like like using the folding paper road maps as opposed to google maps when you have scopes/reticles with ranging tools built into the glass. Im just debating wether or not its in my best interest to keep using the old road atlas or if its time to move on.

Since you never really posted a picture I am guessing you meant something like this (aka no X-mas tree):

Which happens to be a very popular choice on one of the most popular scopes currently (ZCO--reticle MPCT2).

Or the OG:

Yessir. The OG mil-dot specifically. In tandem with the ol’ mildot master and my own dope data. Am I a dinosaur, using an abacus 🧮 🤣🤣 How much of a disadvantage would I be in using this system in a real world situation? Is it time to move into the 21st century?

The reticle is fine--As far as ranging, welp thats all on laser rangefinders. DOPE has moved to kestrels (*cough* cell phone *cough*) and such but there is not subsitute for actually collecting data.

SO yeah Mil-Dot master is a thing of the past, but all that data you have is more important. ASsuming you have a portable phone like device, you are back in the thick of things.

In regard to stuff being outdated, I’m a big fan of being able to perform sans the latest technologies. I’m not against them and do use a laser rangefinder, but I also want to be able to head out with limited resources (such as no batteries) and do well. Will you be as fast or efficient, when times are good, as the guys with all the latest and greatest? No. Will you have an advantage when their fancy tools fail? Yes.

Electronics fail....I always have drop data laminated and a MIL-DOT master in my case

Like others have said there’s nothing wrong with a mil dot scope at all. However, there’s a reason that almost no one that shoots professionally (whether at people, animals, or targets) uses one anymore. Using a more modern Christmas tree style reticle means that you can spot and adjust fire on your own when you miss, using the reticle as your ruler. Also, if needing to hold both wind and elevation it’s way easier. I would give one a fair chance and see what you think.

Reticles are rulers

Mil dot reticles are difficult to read rulers

Hashmark-style milliradian reticles are easy to read rulers

Same units of measurement, one of them much easier to use than the other
