military/police sniper bullets

Re: military/police sniper bullets

Well, it's not something specifically mandated. Making a "sniper bullet" any bullet the sniper, or whom ever makes or reloads his ammo, chooses. ??

Re: military/police sniper bullets

99% of police snipers will be using 168gr Sierra matchkings in one loading or another. Smarter agencies will use bonded core stuff but most are still using GMM or some companys match round.

Re: military/police sniper bullets

I got a thousands of .224" 60 gr Hornady TAP [tactical and police] bullets for 3 cents each.

These are not accurate bullets.
If a .223 can get 1" 5 shot groups at 100y with Vmax bullets, expect 2" groups with the TAP bullets.

I have shot ground squirrels with them with wimpy 13 gr Blue Dot loads at 2500 fps muzzle, and they do expand, and will cut a ground squirrel in half at 100 yards, but they do not expand like Vmax and blow the animal to many pieces.

Re: military/police sniper bullets

Military uses M118LR 175SMK for their .308 loadings. The military also uses the 300 WM and .50 BMG. I think the .50 has the Hornady AMAX for their match rounds, and the 300WM uses a 220gr MK.

Police have diffrent requirements. They will use a brand/weight/type of bulletthat meats the agency requirements. Usually limited to .223 and .308 the bullet is usually mass produced for liability purposes. I do believe that the Secret Service either use to or still does use the 7mm. Pistol, rifle/sniper rifle ammo covers a wide variety of brands. The agency I use to work for issues Win Ranger for pistol and AR-15 ammo, and FGMM for the swats .308 sniper rifle.

Re: military/police sniper bullets

The majority of departments in Indiana are using Federal Gold Metal Match 168gr.

Some are using the various Hornady TAP loads. We will be testing them soon (hopefully) to see if we should make the switch. Not because of any accuracy gain (FGMM is fully capable in that aspect), but because the TAP is designed for critters instead of paper.

Unless something has changed greatly Infantry Snipers use the M118LR for the 7.62mm weapons. When I left the M82A1A was setup to shoot the Raufoss round. I cannot recall the designation for it, but I believe it is Mk211. It makes it easy to spot the impacts at extremely long range. We still shot de-linked ball ammo for most training.

Re: military/police sniper bullets

whats sad is that my dads dept. doesnt even care. they just go out and buy a box of 223 or 308. they have two rifles and ive shot both of them.....needless to say.....my $600 savage shots a hundred times better than what they got. i actually shoot better than their sniper does, ive seen his targets and reports from practice.

I wouldn't want the miss (not LE just thinking about this post).
