Suppressors MIM parts in my Springfield TRP 1911. *UPDATE*

Does anyone know which parts in the TRP full rail model are MIM? I want to ride the gun of all MIM parts. Also, which parts would you replace them with?

Varies with the manufacturer. Colt uses two or three, I believe, while Kimber is almost 100 percent. Springfield should tell you if you call.

Just got off the phone with Springfield, their response

"we can not tell you with parts are mim, all we can tell you is that the mim parts we use are just as good as non mim parts, and that out pistols have a lifetime warranty, and we will replace any borken parts at no cost to you."

so I asked if they wouldnt tell me because he didnt know, he said

"we are just not allowed to give that information out"

I have a distrust of companies that refuse to reveal such info. I understand keeping sources confidential, but...if they feel MIM is equal to forged or machined, why not answer the question?

In their defense, their mim parts dont seem to break like Kimber parts do. But you are right, its bullshit that they wont tell me.

Then wait and see what breaks, also I'm not impressed with Wilson Combat, why, because they have good stuff, and MIM junk, how do you know what your getting, Ed Brown and/or Cylinder and Slide are GTG.

Also I would't be surprised if the whole thing was made from MIM.

Pretty easy to spot in the part description.

Maybe all the small parts, but not the frame, slide and barrel. MIM doesn't work as well once weight reaches about 100 grams (IIRC).

Wilsons Bullet proof line of accessories is all machined from bar stock.

My point about WC is, why compromise, just sell the good stuff, when companies do this people think everything is GTG, Leupold is one of the biggest idiots on the planet, they make good stuff(MK4), and they make crap, Zeiss, S&B, Stiller, Surgeon, Yost, the list goes on don't compromise, everything is good, and priced accordingly.

The sear and hammer are almost always a hardened/bar stock part because otherwise they would chew themselves up pretty fast.

If they won't tell you, that's a good list to start with. As with who to buy from, the wilson bulletproof line is solid, but spendy.

Frankly the whole MIM thing is over blown in many cases. I've seen junk bar stock parts and junk mim parts, I believe it's true that you are more likely to get good parts from bar stock when purchased from a reputable company. I agree absolutely though at the price of wilson/brown/nighthawk and even the TRP which is way overpriced these days there should be no Mim in them in any of the critical parts.

Almost every company out there uses some cast parts, in some cases it does not matter.

Take Wilson, their only guns that use 100% non-mim parts are the supergrades and the CQB elites. But it's rare to ever see even the normal CQB's break parts, they have the bulletproof parts where it counts. Also at what point do you draw the line.... here's an example Wilson earlier this year came out with a bulletproof thumb safety, grip safety, and mag release.

Now a thumb safety I can see, especially if it's an ambi because I've seen several of them break because the two piece design is weak (yet another good reason not to use them). However, a grip safety....I have no doubt that the bulletproof part is stronger but when was the last time anyone saw a grip safety break? I'm sure it happened somewhere, but I've seen half a dozen of the above listed parts fail if not a dozen along my shooting time and never even heard of a grip safety failing. I've also never seen or heard of a mag release failing.

Also another thing to be aware of, usually it's not an issue for quality parts but even the above parts may require some minor fitting, and you should re-verify reliability after replacing them as if the gun was new out of the box. Many times "drop in" does not live up to it's name. If you change several parts you may very well find new issues creeping up. Thumb safeties typically need a little fitting to be reliable with a solid notching.

I've seen countless guns go down at the range and when inquiring to the owner they've changed this part or that out themselves. This is the biggest reason guys have issues with glocks in competitions, they've changed out the springs, the triggers, etc. etc. and then wonder why their glock no longer runs 100%.

Just replace ALL the internals, theres really not that many and you will know for sure that you only have tool steele in your bullet launcher.

Don't forget EGW. I've changed out all the internals in my Kimber Warrior(w/ the exception of the trigger) and replaced them with EGW parts. Oh, I guess the firing pin is a Wilson Bulletproof. I love the EGW extractors.

I just plain quit keeping track of the $ I've got in my 1911s. 460 Rowland bbl, .400 Corbon bbl, ammo for both, 3 different sets of sights, different mag wells, springs, shock buffs, lots of Emery cloth...... goddam..... I love 1911s though.

I want to take Larry Vickers class and build my own off of a Ti Caspian frame.... It's only money right?

Be sure you take a lot off of the extended ejector before you put it back together or you'll have a lot of fun taking it apart cuz it'll feed a round but it won't come out the top if the ejector is too long! Good luck w/ your project.

I wouldn't put an extended ejector in a full size pistol. It's not necessary and there's no real benefit to installing it.

The part that hits the back of the case and knocks the round out of the pistol. The part that's closest to the mag well.

It would be almost flat on the left side if it was a standard ejector.

I just want to replace the stock mim ejector with a machined steel ejector, and the extended version is the only one made by wilson. They dont seem to make a standard length version.

Thanks, I just placed the order with Brownells for all the parts needed for my Trophy Match. I detail striped the gun and cleaned the hell out of it, now I just need to wait for the box-o-parts to show up.

If successful, Ill do the same for my TRP full rail.

you know most of those parts are gonna have to be fitted and tuned dont you? They dont just drop in.

Trigger,extractor, firing pin stop, ejector, sear, hammer, sear spring, possibly mag release.


Its a system and has to be tuned and setup to work properly and reliably. Otherwise you'll just end up with a junky/clunky pistol with expensive parts.

Is the pistol not running right? Is the trigger junk?

If you just want to replace the firing components get a EGW trigger kit. They are pre fitted and tuned. All good tool steel stuff.

I've seen a bunch of Springfields that have been range rentals and the failures I've seen have been a slide stop, and a couple of extractors. I have yet to see a SAI MIM safety break, same goes for FP stops. Hammers, sears and disconnectors have all gone the distance. These pistols all had an excess of 25,000 rds through them
Also an easy way way to tell the hammers are MIM is to look for a raised seam along the edges of the hammer and when out of the frame look for small raised pads on each side of the hammer base. SAI barstock hammers are also stamped with an F for forged

The firing pin isn't MIM, Springfield uses titanium .38 super firing pins in all it's 1911's. A standard firing pin won't fit.

The only production 1911 on the market that has zero MiM parts is the Sig 1911. However it does have a external extractor which is junk. The only way to have a proper 1911 is to have one custom made. Start with a forged frame (Springfield or Taurus) And buy all your internals then send it off to a quality smith.

Thumb safety looks cast more than mim. Grip safety might be mim or cast, couldnt tell, but didnt want to replace either one of those at the moment.


And yes, I do know that there will be fitting involved. If I feel that I cant handle it, I will send it off to a good 1911 smith.

Used in conjunction with a heavy FP spring, this is how SPringfield 1911s get away with not having a firing pin safety due to the less mass of the titanium FP

Thanks, just looked it up on Ed Browns site, but it advertises the Springfield pin a being .075" diameter, and the stock pin is .070" so now Im really lost. Think Ill just keep the factory titanium pin, too much headach.

mim vs cast is a tomato tomaato argument. If you want all tool steel you should do that. But buy the stands/grinding tools to setup the faces on the sear/hammer as well as the grinding jig for the beavertail safety.

The biggest problem people have, besides trying to fit stuff themselves, is the ambi thumb safety.

I'm not tryin to be negative...although I'm coming across that way, is that I hate to see people ruin a fine 1911.

MIM works great. The down sides are greatly exaggerated. If you feel you need to rid yourself of MIM parts and don't have the expertise to do it all correctly please send it to a good smith.

95% of problems/complaints i see with 1911's is a combination of owner fit/dremel demolition.

You've been lucky to purchase a great weapon at a amazing price. I'd hate to see you be unhappy with it.


I've got 8,500 through my newest 1911 with plenty of mim parts and no failures that can be related to mim stuff.

Well the box of parts came from Brownells, they are fast!

I got everything fitted and installed, a whole lot easier than I thought. All I used was a small med-fine hand file, and my digital calipers. I went slow making sure not to overfile anything. It took me about 2.5 hours, but I got everything installed.

Like others stated, the .45cal Wilson firing pin will not fit the slide so Ill be using the factory titanium firing pin. To be honest, had I known the factory pin was titanium, I would not have ordered the Wilson pin in the first place.

Anyhow, just about every parts needed some minor fitting, nothing some slow file work didnt fix. All that needs to be done now is the ejector and extractor have to be blended to the contour of the slide. They are sticking out a bit. Not sure if I want to do that myself, I think Ill let a pro teckle that for me.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the trigger feels soooo damn nice now!!! The Wilson sear and trigger made a huge difference!!! Wouldnt surprise me if the trigger weight measures at 2.5-3 pounds now. Cant wait to shoot the damn thing.
