Mini 14 Custom?

Does anyone think there would be any merit to a completly custom Mini 14 for accuracy and field use. For a while I have had this project in mind. I am thinking full custom. Basicly a minature M14 with total rebuild, barrel, stock and re build the action, trigger etc. I like the M 14/M1A but is is bigger and heavier than I need for field use. The .223 is fine. Opinions, suggestions?? Is someone doing this now?

I have a mini and sometimes think about doing what you described. Just can't justify the cost right now. Lots of other things to save up for before I have work done to the ruger.

Agreed, would rather buy a high quality AR than rework a ruger.

Accuracy Systems is the way to go for a custom Mini with a sub-MOA accuracy guarantee. OR...one of the newer Ruger Mini-14 Target rifles that are MOA or better out of the box.

Mind you, the Accuracy Systems rifle conversions aren't cheap and probably not nearly as cost effective as an AR-15 that can compete out-of-the-box with any custom Mini costing twice as much, but they'll shoot as guaranteed.

Had a Mini 30 done by Carl at ASI. I won't repeat the experience. The Mini platform is very limited in options and performance. Carl if asked really doesn't true anything and builds for a specific factory round that will guarentee MOA accuracy. Gun Doc, [closed until he moves into his new shop] is more of Mini smith than Carl. Gun Doc has done 3 trigger jobs for me , all superior to Carls.I went to Gun Doc's web site [Great West Gun Smithing]' redid my gas bushing, bedded the action and had Gun Doc do a trigger. The rifle consistently shoots 5 shot groups around 1.25 " , no barn burner but way better than factory. Carl is a nice guy and his rifles will shoot, but he is more of parts changer. Do your reseach and know what you want, because if you don't like it, you just don't change it like you can an AR. Good luck
