Mini 14 Scope Mounts

Gentelmen,

I am considering putting an optic on my Mini-14GB and am interested in your thoughts on what system is best. I am looking at the B-Square and Weaver mounts currently. I am most concerned about durability and quality, I dont want something that becomes a part time job to mount solidly and maintain zero.

If you have used these units please comment, if you have used and had positive results with something else that info would be appreciated as well.

Seriously, the shorter barreled Mini-14 G/B ("Government/Bayonet") model rifles were never exactly known for the high degree of benchrest accuracy or for their role as precision instruments, so unless you just have to scope it because of eye issues, etc., I'd leave it well enough alone with the irons.

Now, with that said, scope mounting options really just depend on which variation of the G/B you have and what kind of optic you want/need to mount. Some of the "newer" G/B's have the typical Ruger/Ranch Rifle integral scope/rings mounts built into the receivers while some older models do NOT.

If you want to mount a standard magnified rifle scope on one, your best bet is just to get a decent set of the Ruger rings for the factory scope mount tabs in the receiver if you have those and skip the aftermarket crap from companies like B-Square, Insta-mount, etc., etc. The B-Square and other similar mounts will all work lose and will not offer you nearly as stable a scope mounting option as the factory rings/bases. Again, figure out how big a scope you plan on mounting and then just buy a set of Ruger rings in the size/height that correspond to the scope. If you have to mount a red-dot or similar sight where you need a rail and not just the factory ring mounts, then the GG&G and Weigand rail adapters for the factory machined receiver mounts work.

If your receiver isn't machined with the integral mounts, I'd skip the one-pc, side mount crap altogether and go with something like the Ultimak Mini-14 scout rail which allows for the forward mounting of scout/IER scopes, red-dot, reflex sights, etc.

Maybe a scout mount with a red dot but other than that you are just wasting your $$$$$$$.

Thanks for the info guys. I am aware the Mini is not a sniper rifle, I have some tuned bolt guns for that. My GB mini is a intermediate range utility/defense rifle and thats it. It does not have integral reciever mounts. My thinking is to possibly add a low power optic with a 75 yd zero. The side mounts allow use of the irons if desired. I will continue to do some homework on the idea.

Also, what is the "GC&G" mount? Not familiar with that one.

Leupold makes an optics rail that can be added. Just takes a little mod (drill a couple of holes and tap them).

I proly have an extra one new old stock somewhere.

Got one on mini 30 and a GB, with a good scope you'll get what you're looking for. I get minute of pig ear pretty easy out to 150yds all the time. It actually helped the 30 shoot tighter, don't know about the GB it was already on it. T

That's a "NO" on the GG&G. I, and others, suggested the GG&G when there was an issue as to whether he had a G/B with a receiver equipped with the scope ring mounting slots or an older one that did NOT have them. He confirmed that his G/B does NOT have the slots for Ruger rings, so the GG&G which mounts to the scope ring slots in the receiver will NOT work.

I go back to my original suggestion of the Ultimak type forward rail and either a low-power scout scope (2.5x Leupold or a 2.75x Burris Scout) or something like an Aimpoint or small red-dot sight.

I have had a few mini 14 in the past, and have tried the B-square and others with little luck. The last one I tried was the scout mount and it was the best by far, it improved accuracy like the ad said. I was very pleased with the improvement although a little pricy. I scoped it with a leupold 2.5 scout scope.

Thanks for the ideas guys, the whole issue that started me thinking about this is as follows:

-Was at the range benching the rifle for sight in, I noticed that the rear sight adjustments are pretty coarse, that is when I moved it from one position to the next I jumped from one right of the bull to left of the bull and same for elevation, above then below.
-My particular rifle seems to want to be square inbetween the adjustment settings on the rear sight. Now, I like the sight picture afforded by the rear peep but I dont like the coarse adjustments.
-This got me to thinking about a low magnification scope.

All that said I am now thinking there may be an click adjustable rear replacement sight avialable I could swap out with finer adjustments. So, I am going to investigate that option as well before I scope it.

For center mass shots at 50 yards its totally fine the way it is, but being that this is my home/property defense carbine I would like a bit more exact zero and precision in the unlikely event i would need to take a head shot or thread the needle between obstructions.

So there is the issue, and if anybody can reccomend a fine rear sight I am open to that as well. Going to start hitting the google....

Grind off some of the front sight

Shoot a heavier bullet.

That occured to me but it wont address the gross windage problem unless I thin one side of the blade to try to move POI. I like the Mini's robust design, dont want a paper thin front sight prone to bending. I still think an optic or more adjustable rear sight will be the ticket.
