Depends on where you go. I'm in Cancun right now, and as long as you keep your eyes open and don't wander into back alleys there's plenty of good people just trying to collect those tourist dollars.
I'm not about to venture into Northern Mexico though. That's asking for trouble if you're not the right color.

Last time I was in Mexico was Cozumel in the 90's. The 'maid' left pesos and my bone handle knife laying out on a table but couldn't resist my new custom made leather gunbelt.
We were also at an open air restuarant and the owner came up behind me while my gf was in the bano and asked me where I was from, acting all friendly. I happened to turn back around and there was this street urchin reaching through the window getting ready to grab my gf's expensive camera she'd left laying on the table. He grinned an evil grin and pretended to try and show me some garbage trinkit before taking off. The once friendly maitre d' also turned around and quickly dissapeared. They were obviously working together.
