Yes they are , because they can ,its a second largest miltary in NATO and by leaps and bounds outgunns anything that can be brought to bear in the region ,not to mention coalition planes and troops are stationed in Turkey, so unless plenty of bodybags start filling, there will be no reprisals ,not the same thing as bombing an Arab-Russian PMC working for a local lord of war.

I think we can all agree that this was no mistake. Realistically, I see two possibilities:

1) Power play by the Turks. Sends a message to the Kurds (and the U.S.) that they will attack them wherever they are, even if they're embedded with U.S. troops.

2) The Kurds started the engagement by intentionally firing on the Turks while the Kurds were near a U.S. position, with the hope that the U.S. takes casualties (or at least takes it as a threat), and starts to rethink the whole pull-out thing, if not go on the offensive directly to take out the Turks that fired the shots.
