Looking to get back into some long range shooting and well “general purpose” gun if SHTF

I see some MK12 builds onPX from time to time but been out of shooting (other than NRL22) for some time now.
looking To stay under 2k for gun but is a Mk12 build more of nostalgia? Carried the mod1 in 03/04 it works I like it. But that is almost 18 yrs of advancements that could have been made?

is there a off the rack kit that can get me to600-800 and some hits at 1000?
aero? Looking at 18” and prefer full length hand guards but that’s a looks thing. Any input or directions, I don’t have the tools to build a rifle so buying a used DMR/ paying someone to make one/ off the shelf look to by my options.

I’m open to suggestions.

I believe there are some good options out there but if your looking for a Mk 12 I highly suggest the PRI since they use the Douglas barrels and all that. If you have a lower you can just get the upper and place it on saving yourself some money. Im partial to the mk 12 look myself but I would also check out centurion arms (good reviews) and BCM (although BCM is not a true mk 12 it will do the job well) hope everything works out for you! I just put in for an order of the HCS Mk 12 Mod 1 and cant wait for the transaction to carry through.

Best of luck!

IMO decent ARs haven’t changed much since @sinister helped develop the DMR system(s) almost 20 years ago. I have ARs from 12.5” to 20” and have had 24”. 18” is a happy medium and I can and do take the “dated” mk12 mod0 to 1k. 300-500 is where it really shines IMO, with 600-750 doable when conditions (wind) dictate. I’ll admit, it’s a heavy platform for MOUT training and the AEM5(awesome can) makes it’s a touch long if you’re working confined spaces but it’s workable with a red dot and gives you some options when you’re out of the house an SBR doesn’t.

If you don’t want the weight, 14.5” with a can and a 1-6 or 1-8 LPVO. Jack of all trades... We built my wife a RECCE set up for the same can with a URC3.1 and a Aimpoint. I had a custom profile done to keep the weight down. Worked so well we did a similar build for my daughters 16” with Geissele. Can’t go wrong with any of these.

To me, the Mk12 build would be a piece for nostalgia and shooting enjoyment.

Plenty of good (lighter) alternatives that will do the same job...just good luck not paying a bunch of extra $$$ right now to get one with this craze.

I've got a FN DMR II that shoots ~1.3 MOA with factory Speer Gold Dots, and about that again with several types of 55gr stuff...nothing premium. I should handload for it, but it's doing what I ask for of it right now quite well (shares carry around the ranch duty). I've killed five hogs this summer with it during the day, four more at night, and took a coyote at 200 with it last week.

Mod 1 is an awesome rifle, as you know- those Douglas barrels are hammers. I have a mod 1 and H and love them. That said, trigger options, hand guards (MLOK vs cheese graters) and things like carbon wrapped barrels give you many more options to choose from these days.

Have you checked out LMT, Centurion Arms, KAC’s LPR (over 2k but an awesome out of the box rifle) or Larue OBR 5.56 20”?

Those will get the job done at least to 700 with BH 77g OTM; hits at a grand are possible in reasonable conditions.

Im sure there’s others but those are top of mind for now...

I have a Mk12 Mod 0 clone^* that I love to shoot, but it’s purely for deployment nostalgia since AR, optic, and suppressor tech has evolved so much since 2002. You can make something so much better these days that’s less bulky, lighter, and more capable.

For that reason I recently built an SPR 2020 concept rifle For non-nostalgic use. It’s a “if I was doing the same job downrage today” configuration:

LMT MLR 16” 1:7
CMC trigger
Heathen assaulter bipod
NF NX8 1-8x

The SPR was great in static positions, but this 2020 config could easily be used to clear a house, then engage targets out to 600m.

* I’m still looking for a Leupold 3.5-10x40mm to make it 100%
