Hi everyone,

I looking to pick up a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42SF Mildot for a Remington 700. I'm not sure which moa base I should get; either 0, 15, or 20. Most of my shooting will be at 100 yards, so I'd need a base that I would be able to zero the Nikon at 100 yards. I will probably on occasion be shooting 600-800 yards as well, so I'm wondering if there is a base that will allow me to shoot between 100-800 yards?

Re: MOA Base for Nikon Monarch on Remington 700

The scope you have selected has a max adjustment range of 40 MOA. I would recommend sticking to a 10 MOA canted base. A 15 MOA base may be pushing it, and a 20 MOA is out, if you want a 100 yd zero.

As to whether a 10 MOA base will allow you to shoot out to 800 yds, if you told us what caliber and bullet you are planning to us, then we could answer that as well.

owsiu, I think that you may be painting yourself into a corner with that choice of scope, due to its limited range of adjustment. I'm thinking that something having in the range of 60MOA range of adjustment in conjunction with a 20 MOA base will get you where you need to be.

I'm just saying this because the PST that I got had 60MOA of range and the 20MOA base put me where I needed to be with my .308, when I was considering using that scope.

I've bought 2 in the last couple months and they've both had 60 moa of travel. I also use the Leupold longrange one piece base.

Had that same scope on a rem 700 varmint 308. Mounted it on a egw 20 moa hd base and burris xtr rings, zeroed at 100 yds with room to spare.

Having said that the monarch was my first scope for trying longer range stuff. If I had known then what I know now I would not have got it. On the cheap the weaver 3-10 grand slam mil/mil or bushnell 10x mil/mil would be my choice. The same gun now sports a weaver tactical 3-15 with a ss 5-20 on order.

Had the grand slam on it for a while and the functions it offers were much better than the monarch imo.

Just helping others learn from my mistakes.

Also that monarch is not going to have matching turrets and reticle like the other scopes mentioned. I think for what you are looking to do, a good ole straight 10x might fit the bill and then you could get the matching turrets and reticle for a reasonable price, like in the weaver, even the bushnell and of course the SS. With any of those, the issue of enough elevation adjustment is a mute point.

+1

lol yeh, if you plan to go out to 100-800 with mil/moa turrets you're not going to enjoy the experience at all..! It'll serve you well for the 100m shots but dont get too disappointed when you can't work out what adjustments are required going out further.
