Hey all,

The 100-300 yd area at my range has poured concrete benches with the circular cutouts, I cannot for the life of me get square behind the rifle. I would ideally like to shoot prone but the topography of the range leaves me staring at the first berm unable to see past.

I see some mention of shooting modified prone in a situation like this, but after spending the morning searching I can’t get a good visual of what exactly this would look like. From what I can gather I should set up to the rear of the bench and lean over it? Or am I way off base here?

thanks everyone, sorry if it’s incredibly obvious

Sounds like you are going the right direction.
Joel on Precision Rifle Network does this position in his videos a lot. Here is an example

The new range near me uses the silly benches, too. The local range where I could shoot prone is now closed to the public forever, unfortunately. If I square up at the aft end of the bench, it's not wide enough for my elbows to rest. Even this guy's elbow is hanging off the edge a bit.

I was thinking for cheap a thick piece of plywood with some 2x2 borders underneath, a pad at the back to push your chest in tight and a little border strip for keeping brass from rolling off.

Figure where you want to put a strip to load your bipod on.

Have not been much of a bipod bench guy but with a stop to load up on that may change.

So would a bench " topper " be a party foul?

A clamp on situation or just slip over and extend the bench top.

I know another thing to drag.

Yeah... I'm already bringing quite a bit of gear to the range (use a wheeled cart). While it's a great idea, I'm thinking the last thing I feel like adding to the stuff I'm dragging to the range firing line is LUMBER. 🥴
