What are some methods for modifying a scope base to add some additional cant? I have Savage rifles so I am limited to a 20moa base from a few different manufactures. I read something a while back about shiming the base with a small piece of a playing card. I guess this could work but it doesn't seem like a precise permanent solution. Any other ideas or what has worked for you guys?

If you plan to shim use something like a soda can as a playing card when wet will fall apart. Also they actually sell shims.

Devcon anyone? Seriously, a base with the appropriate MOA built in should be used whenever possible. If you can't, then shims made of metal would probably be the best. Maybe shim it up and then fill in the gaps with devcon and it might look decent?

I've read of guys shimming the base until the 100 yd. zero is a little bit above bottom (still gives some room down as well as windage adj.), Then bedding it there with Devcon. Kills two birds with one stone. Cheap zero stop of sorts and maximum elevation for the scope.

I don't know if the OP's Savage is an older one like my 10FP with a flat receiver (pre-Accu-Trigger). If it is he, like me, will find his choices limited (e.g. EGW aluminum, Warne steel, and Badger steel).
Before one piece bases with MOA cants were available, you'd resort to DIY or using something like Armament Technology once offered (15 MOA shim) which I bought and used with a Remington 700V back in '94. My Savage 10FP is a '98 model so again I was on my own. My one piece Leupold base has a 15 MOA shim I made. The set up is solid and is still working just fine. I've toyed with the notion of buying a canted base but figured why fix what ain't broke

I started with Burris DD Signature bases, and added 20 moa into the rings with the eccentic inserts. Then I jacked up the rear base with a .04" shim I made from a piece of sheet metal.
I haven't bedded it in place, but may if it slips at all. It seems solid as is.
The scope is a 16X Super Sniper. With 100 yard zero I have 6 moa down, and 114 moa up. Clearance between the barrel and front lens cover is about .05"

I have a newer model 10FP. I wasn't aware the 30moa bases were available. I am also looking to do this to my MKII so I can have the ability to toy with 400 yards. I know my options for the MKII are 20 and 25 moa. I would like to add a additional 15 to 18 to my EGW 20 moa base on the 10FP also. Montana Marine that is a hell of a nice setup there. Thanks for the input fellas.

Another way to add some forward slope to a sloped base (pic rail), is to use the Burris Signature Zee rings. They do make them in 30mm, and they fit a pic rail. With the eccentric inserts that are included with the 30mm rings, you can add about 20 moa, by putting the -.010 eccentric in the bottom of the front ring, and the +.010 eccentric in the bottom of the rear ring.
I went that route on my 10/22 to get extra el out of the scope, but in this case 1" rings, and a Bushnell 10X.

You can get some more by shimming under the scope tube on the rear ring. Shims are available from many places.....leupold has them is you call CS.

+1 on the burris rings.
only try this with a one piece base: you can also make a shim out of a piece of aluminum soda can, thin enough to even cut / trim to shape with scissors. put a hole or two in the center where the mounting screws go through the base to prevent slipping out. no paper playing card to degrade with time / elements.

A gunsmith with a mil should be able to modify your base. Might have to do it by "trial and error", a little at a time. But its doable.

to get more out of the 0 MOA base on my howa i cut up a coke bottle into shims the size of the underside of the rear of the pic rail. i think i used maybe 3 or 4 slivers, and it has tightened down great, no risk of moisture wrecking it, and no movement after hours and hours of the rifle hanging out the side of my 4x4 whilst spotlighting vermin.
also have had the scope off and back on to check that the base hadnt loosened and it was all still perfect. i wouldnt advise going much thicker than that as you risk buckling your rail, or tweaking your reciever.
my howa is a hammer out to 350ish, which is about as far as i will shoot it under the light.
got me out of a pinch as i was really upset i only had 15ish inchs travel up at 100 yards after it was mounted normaly. now i have much much more....the was with a zeis conquest 4.5-14x50 (great scope)

I used six playing cards to temporarily jack up the back of the mount, than the base was bedded with acra glass gel. After it set up the cards were removed the base was cleaned up a little and the rear portion where the cards were slipped in was bedded. The original base had 20moa,after the bedding I gained an additional 45 moa (65 total).
Why so much? Because that is what is needed to get a 10 -22 to 500 yards with a 100moa scope. I have done two others with the first one still shooting great after two years of shooting.
I have not done a centerfire but see no reason why it would not work just fine.

Getting the scope as low as possible really helps on an HTG stock, and I really like the fact that the scope is slick on the left side, keeping the loading/ejection port area wide open.
Having 100+ moa on tap is going to be fun. I'm going to really push this rig, in the recreational realm of LR shooting. It's an M700 SPS Varmint LH, 308Win, 26" bbl, 1/12 twist.
