Not everyone cares about a straight line, there are many types of amateur racing like HPDE, Autocross, Rallycross, etc. that are easy to get into and let you do things that you cannot do on the street. I like messing with cars of all types and not so I can go faster on the road, street racing of any kind is just dumb. I agree with saving money for a retirement fund though. On the other hand, I don't see what is different about spending money on your car and spending money on guns. They are both enjoyable hobbies for many people.
