I got another idea!
I just need some input.

I am going to make a ghillie, but the top of the ghillie would attack to a molle gear vest like this.

I know, its cheaper than dirt, but Im not rich, and this is an experiment.

I plan to make the ghillie detachable from the vest via some sort of plastic buckle so there is no rust like metal. Anyone know of something that would not be as noisy as the buckles? I dont want it permanently attached.

This will enable you to carry mags and stuff on the vest for hunting and other stuff.

I really like where this is headed.

D-Ring fasteners, like on packs. If you wanna shed it quickly use zip strips for a temp. method of securing it. When done, cut'em loose.

Plastic D-Rings if you must have non-metal. Or the cinch down straps like at the bottom of a backpack shoulder strap.
Or rubber coated metal d-rings....no rust, no noise

Usually takes two to make a complete set. Take a piece of webbing, run it through one, around the round part on one, and back through the second and pull tight.

I would talk to Stu at RedTac Gear before investing in that MOLLE Vest. He showed me a really cool Ultralight Vest at the SHOT show that would work better and then you would be supporting a Hide Members company and getting American Made stuff to boot. Stu is a great guy and I'm sure if you needed anything specific designed or made in the realm of Nylon Gear he would be more than happy to assist.

i've seen one built around a molle vest before, but i am not sure if it was a detachable type. worked very well and i'd say its a swell idea with lots of promise. modular anything seems to be the way of the world.

Law enforcement use reusable zip tie plastic cuffs, uses standard handcuff key to open. Might be something to consider...

Check out DIY tactical http://www.diytacticalstore.com/catalog/ they have all sorts of buckles and means of attaching.

With that said why not something like the tactical concealment viper hood? Its as easy to drop as taking off a jacket and can fit over gear and packs. I am assuming there will be not much crawling involved with this suit and would be more for recon as its not the most feasible to crawl around with a full vest on.

Have you thought about sewing your own gear eventually? Its not too hard to learn, really helps with making ghillies, and someday you might come up with some revolutionary design. I came up with a holster design that I may bring to the tactical world someday down the road. Just a couple ideas.

good call sw! the field expedient versions are really handy and work great for projects like this! perfect for using with molle webbing. i keep a small suppy of itw field expedient hardware and extra webbing in my field pack. great for repairs and on-the-spot improvising!

Try Maxpedition Grimlocks. You get four to a pack. I use them on my Camelbak.

Be careful in how you attach the Fastex clips. I tried using them on my regular ghillie for school. Not the best idea in hindsight, zip stripping them to reinforceent points didn't really work. as they would dangle and get in the way. as the ghillie wash tore the F#@k out of them.
If you do go this route and are attaching them, make sure they are in bomb-proof spots. Also spread them out as much as you would for a regular netting on a ghillie. grimlocks would probably work ok, but can get pricey. I'd say go with the 3/4" buckles from DIY tactical. And put at least 3-4 to a row with 5-6 rows on the back side of the top alone.


I guess the real question is how quick do you want this stuff coming off? Because if all you are looking for is for it to be retained, just tie 550 cord off to the MOLLE webbing with a lark's head knot on the plate carrier every 4th loop or so, stagger it's layout every other row, and then tie down the netting. Might take a little longer to get on and off, but cheaper in the long run.

Other thing to consider is the end of the netting you are using. The fastex won't cut it for that. You might consider a combination fastex for the center/ 550 cord tieoff for the edges. tie off the edge every 3rd netting loop or so with a square knot. It would be much better than the setup I had. But I doubt you are planning on putting it through the ghillie wash 3 times!! lol!

Another suggestion that was given to me was take some mosquito netting sew or glue it on the back of your yeti net or whatever you are using for your jute, and then get a button snap machine and put the female portion of the snaps every 3" in rows 3" apart,staggering them. Then put the male portions on your top, mirroring the netting. Haven't tried it yet, but looking into it.
