another + for lubing ammo.

1st target 12" x 8.5" group (if you can really call it a group yeah i know it stinks, the BV model is waiting on an a replacement optic, still trying to get by using the walmart F model), unlubed other than factory lubed CCI SV ammo.

both shot 200 yards prone w/ bipod no rear support

WITHOUT ADDITIONAL LUBE

WITH ADDITIONAL LUBE

group shrank to 6.5" x 5.75", even with the MKII F

i've had great success using alox bullet lube and bowstring (bee's) wax, but gets "clumpy" and "stiff" in cold weather.

the stuff i used today (15 degrees) is an industrial silicone based lube and stayed "juicy" in the cold. it was no more messy than the stuff on wolf and sk ammo.

i was short on time and couldn't do a thorough testing, but will have to investigate this "new stuff" i tried today during christmas week, stay tuned.

Not too sure I understand...is there a simplified version? Can we get step by step pictures of the process? J/J I'm still laughing out loud in my cubicle, good thing this office is empty. Now I need to convince the wife to join me at the range...so she can lube the tip! Thanks for sharing the results of your experimentation, I learn something new every time I visit this place.

Thanks for posting this TP. Keep us updated on your results. There was an article in the IHMSA news a couple years ago about removing lube and putting homeade lube on bullets and his results were lining up with yours. Good stuff.
Just to clarify do I have to spin the case or can I twirl my greasy finger around the bullet. What if I don't like getting grease onmy fingers? Could I use a tiny spatula like icing a 40gr lead cake?

No chikn... if you don't use your fingers it doesn't work because the acid in your skin reacts with the lube to make it more ballistically effective.

thanks guys, i tried to do a "full test" @ 50 100 and 200 on just this silicone stuff i came across over the christmas / new year's holiday, but the wind was just a little too much to provide strong data.

hopefully calmer conditions this weekend.

I agree, I've seen consistently tighter groups with lubed factory ammo than non. But I've never done it myself. What do you use for it?[/s Never mind just read your post above.

I been lubing bullets for a many years on .22 subsonic vel . ( strait lead bullets ) . never on the copper/brass washed lead hi-vel .
Anyway here is my secret formula .
50% - Brownells moly slide lube -&- 50% - Bee Seal Plus , boot protection paste .
mix both together in a creamy paste & use the finger method described above to apply to bullets .

maybe that's the secret

it hit me in the head today to try some wolf with the lube removed (acetone and a rag) to see if it loses it's consistancy.

unfortunately variable and swirling winds put the brakes on it.

i did shoot a 100 yard comp target today lubed and unlubed, the lubed one score higher, just as with the 200 yard one in the biggining of the post. as the comps are shot without rear support, i found it to be indecisive on the silicone grease until conditions are better.

Did the lubed group impact point higher than the factory ammo? i would think it would be the case. I think with more lube, the benefit is better wind resistance, same as improve the BC of the bullet. If my theory holds, you should see more improvement under windy conditions as compared to calm days, but from what you writes, it dose not seem to be the case.

TP do you think that this could be an answer to inconsistency in performance from one season to the next? We found some real trouble with scores dropping at our TSC matches when cold weather was introduced. I definately noticed a pronounced drop in performance of the 922A ammo from 80deg to 50deg. The 922A has a waxy lube and definately gets harder as the temp drops.

in the hot summertime it's GTG but the Paraffin/wax base lubes on lead .22 shoots like shit in the winter months. I find accuracy starts to suck bigtime as soon as it starts to get into the 50 F. deg. & lower . It is the worst & cheapest lube to use . & when it's cold, Takes a bunch of shooting to get the Bore warmed-up & things hitting in the proper POI .

Most of the 22 rimfire stuff is dip lubed after loading and it's pathetically inaccurate as to the amount applied.

What about a lube like my Imperial sizing die wax?

How much lube are you using?

Is it just to make the bullet slipperier or does it seal the bullet better in the bore?

I dont ever shoot Brass or Copper washed .22 rimfire . But does anybody out there hBN tumbler/coat there copper/brass washed .22 Ammo ???

Seams like that would be spectacular lube for washed .22 Rimfire ammo .
It would be EASY as you can just throw full loaded ammo & hBN coat the whole Brick @ a time . then lightly Towel/wipe it off & shoot it .

yes, along with listed in the order of best results through my gear using savage mkii BV and 4 different types of ammo:

1. spray moly
2. bowstring wax
3. alox bullet lube
4. crossbow rail lube
5. parafin wax
6. carnuba wax
7. crayon
8. case lube
9. pam cooking spray
10. gun stock wax
11. pledge

the alox bullet lube and bowstring wax seemingly being the most convienant to apply either at home or at the range as it's packaging makes it easier to apply, and is a whole lot easier and cheaper than the moly spray.

the weather has still got me beat, i can't find buy a calm day recently to do some good comparison with the silicone grease. i'm staring down a 4 day weekend, hopefully the weather will cooperate.

also had a thought....remove the lube off some wolf ammo and then shoot it to see how if it will print much worse than before the de-lubing.

using enough to coat the bullet without creating big globs. not to scientific about the amount, but over doing it gets into the magazine and usually gets wiped off when going into the chamber, so over doing is not really a good idea.

there's alot of reasons out there why it's done, most opinions are for a consistant gas seal. but whatever the reason, it seems to work. i did notice a slight increase in FPS with all of the lubes applied, i don't know if it was due to the better gas seal or because the lube allowed the bullet to slip out the barrel with less resistance.

Should I get a can of slick-50 and hit up a whole box of cci std vel's? Or is this a bad idea? I have enough trouble trying to load mags with Wolf Match, the stuff is so slippery I drop more rounds on the floor than fired cases.

FWIW it would seem like a wax/paste (like Imperial, etc.) would be a good answer for lubing bullets, whereas the carrier in the spray lubes might have a tendency to penetrate the neck and foul the gunpowder if stored over time. No facts to prove this, just a thought.

not sure yet, just availabel at work. still have to do some more digging for the source of supply. hopefully i can get out when the weather is calm to give it an objective test.
