Need a little help guys. What would be a good .22 ammo that would stay subsonic although it doesn't have to be labeled as subsonic. I have tried the remington subsonic and the aguila subsonic both 38 gr. The aguila is ok and the remington shoots decent just isn't very consistent as far as velocity goes. You can tell that some are a little hotter than others by sound and hits on target. I am shooting this out of a savage Mark II with a 18 inch barrel and suppressor. I know some target ammo stays subsonic so anyone have any suggestions of what to try. I hear a lot about wolf does it stay subsonic.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subsonic

Most of us with the savages are having good luck with SK Match or Wolf Match Target (the cheaper wolf) not the match extra or what ever its called though .22's can be weird so by all means try a box of the more $$$ wolf. Its like a buck or 2 more per box so not a huge deal.
Eley generally works good as a standard, but once again in .22's u never know till u try it most of the time.
Lapua worked pretty well in my savage. SK ,WOLF ,and Lapua all are made at the same factory, and all share the same headstamp. The Lapua can get pretty costly though .12-30$$$ per box of 50 depending on what grade u get.

Hope this helps.
As a reference last winter shooting SK Match I was able to get a lot of 5 shot .5-.6 ctc groups at 94yds shooting off a bipod and sandsock. Now that its warm out seems I get groups closer to .6-.9 Still not too bad for a cheap rifle.

good luck.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subsonic

oh yeah one other thing. With wolf and SK being a bit cheaper target ammo lot by lot vels can vary a bit. Last time I tested wolf was running 1080-1100. Extremes would hit as high as 1120 (almost breaking sound barrier at my alt),but didn't have too many of those. The SK was doing about 1080 with a sd of about 10-15fps.
Seems to vary lot to lot though about which one is better.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subsonic

Thanks guys, I found some Wolf Match for $49/500 so went ahead and ordered a 100 rnds to try. I'll see how they do and see if I can find some sk match to try also. I have shot some of the CCI subsonic but its been a while and at the time I really wasn't trying to do any accuracy testing. In fact I think I just shot it out of my .22 ar15. My biggest objective is trying to keep them subsonic while shooting suppressed, but at the same time I want accuracy also. I will be shooting these at just shy of 100yrds. So I'll see how it goes.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subsonic

I think you will like the Wolf MT for what you have in mind.

I shoot them in suppressed Sako FinnFire, CZ Varmint, and several 10/22's and yes....they will cycle the bolt and still be below SOS.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subsonic

JDT...be aware that it may take 50 or more rounds of each different ammo to stabilize your barrel with the different lubes, powders and alloys. Clean between strings of each different cartridge and allow the barrel time to stabilize. To really tell what each will do in your rifle will likely require MORE than 100 rounds. So, before you order, be sure you have enough for a meaningful test...no reason to pay multiple HazMat fees. JMHO

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subsonic

I'll keep that in mind I actually ordered 1000 rnds sorry missed the last zero on my last post. Hopefully that will be enough to see how well they do.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subsonic

RWS subsonic is much slower than the others I've shot.
It has also been very consistent in velocity and accuracy in my rifles.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subs

I used to like Federal 711B in several of my rifles until I tried it suppressed and found that about half of the rounds went supersonic - seemed to be very inconsistent in that regard.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subs

Well the brown truck dropped off my wolf match this afternoon so I shot a box of 50 before dark I was pretty impressed with it but only got to shoot from about 50 yards. I am more anxious to see how 100 yards does maybe I'll get a chance tomorrow. I can say that it seemed very consistent. I easily had 35 shots in a hole about the size of a quarter. I know it was only from 50 yards but still seemed a lot better than the other I've tried. Also, I picked up 1000 rnds of sk standard plus at a gun show this weekend. I know its not the match but figured I would try it anyway. Haven't tried any of the sk yet looks just like the wolf though.

Re: Most accurate/consistent .22 ammo staying subs

I will vouge for the CCI Green Tag. I have not found a better .22 as far as accuaracy goes out to 150 yards. My favorite .22 by far. Little pricey, but I love them.
