I am a lurker, not a poster on this forum..but I was not able to find any info using the search. I thought this topic was better suited to the hunting forum, cause its not a full custom build. Last year I found all the info I needed when I built a full custom 257. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

I am planning on customizing a rifle. I at first thought about doing another full custom, but realized it would be hard to beat the starting weight of a remington model seven. I have never owned a 308 before, so I decided to get a synthetic model in 308. I have not received it yet, its currently on order. I was looking at this rifle or the model 70, this one won out due to lower price and more available after market parts.

Do any of you have any experience with the model seven? I am going to put a Timney trigger on this rifle. That is what I put on my 257, and I just think it would be good to have the triggers close to the same. I also want to free float and glass bed the stock. I would like to replace the factory stock. I have looked at Manners and McMillan. I only have experience with McMillan. What others should I look at? Price and weight will be deciding factor if I change the stock.

This rifle will be for carrying up and down the mountain I hunt on...short range shots on the side of the mountain, so I plan to put a nightforce 2.5-10x32 with a low velocity reticle on top. I will continue to use my heavier 257 on top of the mountain when hunting long ranges from shooting houses.

If this topic doesnt belong here...I apologize

Thanks

Re: Mountain rifle

I think an aftermarket trigger is the way to go, and a lightweight stock bedded is even better. Most of the makers will make a lightweight carry rifle stock, carbon fiber maybe. Precision, manners, mcmillan are all very good. Anything is better than that plastic stock. You might consider two piece mounts and aluminum rings also. I built a lightweight a few years ago on a 700 adl, used a 20 oz stock, and mounted a 2.5 to 8 leupold on it, really nice to carry. Have fun.

Re: Mountain rifle

Running a 7 in 260 for a deer rifle and the only changes I have made was swapping the wood stock to a synthetic and adjusting the trigger. Its a hammer for 3 shots then starts to heat but i have never needed more than 1 with it. Cant say that I would ever do anything else to the little hunting rifle.

Re: Mountain rifle

Good to know you guys are happy with them.. Im excited about it. Cant wait to get this project going and get some loads ready for the season next year.

Re: Mountain rifle

The Seven makes a fine lightweight hunting rifle. My first bolt gun was a Seven in .308 and I had some good luck with that little honey on whitetails...

It has since acquired a PAI (the old APA) custom makeover to 7-08, and I like it even more. 23", #3 Broughton & AWR stock...

I also have custom builds on Seven actions in .17Predator & .22-243, both with #3 tubes & AWR stocks. So that should tell ya a little more on how much I like the 'mountain rifle' setup for my bolt hunting rigs...

I think you made a wise decision and best of luck with your new stick!
