Moving from MA to VT or NH. Trying to decide which state would be better for myself. I could careless about magazine size. I live in Massachusetts and don’t feel the need to carry a spare mag. If I can’t do what needs to be done for in 11 rounds...well then, shame on me. Anyways...long range is my game. Only own one AR and well it’s been collecting dust for years. Which state is better for bolt gunners?

#1 need has nothing to do with it,,,

send me your AR magazines as you dont really need them

Definitely NH, can’t go wrong when your license plate says “live free or die”. Not that it says much anymore by having a gun manufacturer based out of your state but Sig Sauer is located in NH.

NH is much better in some respects but MA is spilling over and no one can prognosticate how well it will go in the future.

The issue with NH is high property taxes. MA people coming in and maybe overturning the "live free or die" spirit.

The nice thing about VT is the price of land is cheap depending on where in VT. You can buy a large enough piece of land to shoot on your own property. Despite what you see in the news, hippies are not everywhere. I spend a good amount of time in VT and it is pretty nice and people in northern VT are pretty 2A friendly.

Personally, I am looking at land in ME. Maine, IMHO, won't fall prey to this crap

I dunno, Portland has become an anti-2A lefty hipster Mecca! And don’t even get me started on their senator Susan Collins! Last time I was there, almost got into an argument with a group at a restaurant over some Trump comments. They were so far left...never mind im just going to bite my tongue!

Yeah but those places are everywhere. Tell me one state that doesn't have a major population center that is left.

Maine is freaking huge land wise so there is a lot of places where you don't have to worry at least for now

I’d tell you some places but i don’t want to put these places on the map, if you feel me. Lol. Yes, Maine is pretty big. I’ve driven all around it. Almost drove into Canada on my last trip. But the problem remains that these big cities cause problems for the rest of the state.

yeah but we have maple syrup and foliage and shit.....bitches love foliage.

And ya gotta love those bitches that love that foliage.
Yes, I know, it’s really beautiful up there. I would love to come up during the color change. And I was in Quebec City this summer, so I have plenty of maple syrup. ?. I was just ribbon ya about Kentucky or Tennessee. I hope whichever you decide, it works out well for you.

long range shooting options?

There are five private 600 yard KD ranges within an hour and half drive of greater Boston. You can shoot NRA midrange or across the course every Saturday and Sunday from April to October.

There are also three 1000+yd steel ranges within two and half hours. There is also Prs matches being held in northern VT at Camp Ethan Allen.

The northeast has long traditions of marksmanship competitions. It was very popular with the upper crust in the 19th century and later.

There are way more than that. Message me if you need help finding them.

Do you mind sharing as I live there and I only know

Woodcock Rd in Dartmouth - 500 yard range
Reading MA - 600 yard but not open to the public except for F-Class matches on given days and virtually no chance of getting in as a member without someone dying
Fort Devens - 600 yard but is not open to the public for more than a day a month but limits the armament you can use.
Granby , MA - 1,000 yard range closed for now
SIG Academy - 1,000 yard range but you need to take a course
Pelham Rod and Gun - 600 yard range

I know of no others

I forgot about Dartmouth. Never been there.

Otherwise:

Reading rifle: all matches are open to the public. You’re wrong on membership. You need a sponsor, but membership is open, and we take in members all the time. There is no cap. I am on the board there.

Nashua Fish and Game: Merrimack, NH. Nicest range KD range in New England. Matches open to the public, wait list to join.

Pelham Fish and Game: matches open to public, membership is fairly easy I believe. Range faces south.

Cheshire County Fish and Game: Keene, NH
Limited 600 KD range open for matches only a few times a year. Use of the 600 requires closing the whole facility.

Scarborough Fish and Game: Scarborough, ME. 600 yd KD also facing south. Lots of F-class shooters.

There is also 1000yd KD in Albany at Forbes

There is no steel shooting at these clubs, but Reading, Nashua, and Scarborough will be using all electronic scoring systems this coming year. Very cool.

Steel Ranges

Granby: currently open to 550 for members. Matches shoot to 980. They have forced the town to consider settling. They will be getting the 1000 open again in the near future. Great group of PRS shooters. Easy membership. Monthly matches.

Sheepdog Warrior: Catskill, NY. Steel to 1000 and capability to shoot one mile. It’s a commercial venture and membership dues are steep. Hourly range rental is reasonable. They will have their second PRS local series this year. It’s worth the trip from Boston.

Pemigewasset Fish and Game. Holderness, NH monthly PRS matches to 650yds. Easy membership. Steel is only put out for the matches though.

Alder brook Sportsman: Littleton, NH. New 1200yd range opening this year. I’m told there may be some matches. Time will tell.

Ridgeline/Team ONeil: Littleton, NH. This is a new venture/venue focused mostly on training. They have held one PRS series match each year for the last two years. It’s a very tough, unforgiving range. No open membership, but the guys running it are serious guys. Ought to be pretty cool.

VT Rifle and Pistol Assoc. : Camp Ethan Allen, Jericho, VT. Last year the guys up there were able to secure some range time on base. They had steel targets out to 1500yds. The current commander is cooperative and likes the matches being held there. It should last, but is solely at the commanders discretion. The next one may not be so agreeable. The CMP has also started hosting Games and Cup matches there in September on the KD range.

Hope that helps.

Excellent information. Many that I didn’t know about for certain.

I was also unaware about Reading. I have been there to watch matches and was told it is super difficult to get into.

I forgot to list Sheepdog. Never been there but heard a lot of good things.

I am watching Alder brook. They stated that it would be this year

Thanks again

The trick to getting into Reading faster is exactly what you did. Come to the matches. Get to know the guys and someone will sponsor you. All the KD clubs run prone matches that will usually allow tactical rifles to shoot along side. You just might have to remove your brake. The match schedules should be finalized and posted pretty soon.
Feel free to PM me if you need more info or help finding more info.

Thank you

I will definitely do so. I had no idea you could run a tactical rifle. I thought it had to be F-Class compliant
