Muzzle brake caliber

I am wondering if there is any negative impact if mount a .338 muzzle brake on a .308 or 6.5 barrel?

The reason I am asking is if a .338 muzzle brake can be used on smaller caliber barrel with the same threaded barrel, then I don't need to buy one for each caliber.

Yes, because you don't really need a brake on those calibers.

@Culpeper is absolutely right. You don’t need to brake them.

That said...

I brake them, because I have had wayyyyyy too many head injuries, and I have to be very careful with jostling. TBI’s are no joke.

They’re also useful/needed if you have shoulder injuries, c spine injuries, etc, and recoil of any kind bothers it.

If you’re a healthy chap/chapette, no need for a brake. I shot unbraked magnums for years. Now I brake everything. Except 5.56, because I have a can for that.

To answer your question specifically, I have a brake for each gun. The 308 has its own brake, the 338 has its own brake. I’m poor so that’s the end of my list. They’re both switch barrels, or rather will be when I can stop being poor and get more barrels spun up. Those barrels will likewise have brakes.

I despise brakes. If I were competing, sure. Other than that purpose they are obnoxious even with double hearing protection. Different strokes I guess.

The other day somebody was asking what brake for a 6BR. It's getting ridiculous. And people were giving suggestions. I'm 60 now and can still get behind my 300 H&H for fifty and call my own shots and not be any worse for wear the next day. I just don't get it for thirty cal and below. It simply is not enough recoil to warrant it. In fact, it probably induces bad habits away from fundamentals. I can understand if you have mastered the fundamentals and then want a brake but I just cringe when I see people encouraging a brake with no knowledge about the shooter whatsoever. Recoil is a subconscious afterthought after you send it for these mid and small rounds. If it is kicking your ass then you are doing yourself a disservice by not figuring out why and subsequent figuring out it is not the rifle. Sometimes easier softer ways avail us nothing. What are you going to do when somebody hands you a rifle without a brake? Run?

But why pay hundreds for training and learning how to shoot when you can buy a $75 brake and be a sniper.

If that line of thinking we’re true then there is no need for suppressors. Just wear electronic ear pro.

I think you’ll have a few guys chime in.
Tell every guy at the next prs match they are wasting their time with suppressors or brakes as well.

What about if you want to shoot 100 out of your HH. Not everyone shoots 50 rounds and goes home.

I've told a guy at a PRS match in white heels before Easter that wasn't cool.

BTW, the real purpose of a suppressor is to be sneaky. A brake and a suppressor are two different animals. I'm only stating this so people don't get the impression that you're correct.

Second part then why does anyone use them other than hunting.

The after trigger pull flinch inducing process is comprised of noise and recoil and possible discomfort from “kick”.

Why should we try to mitigate both as much as possible. Certain people especially newer or shooters of smaller stature should take all the “help” they can get.
