Just got him this weekend, it was a fun hunt. Tough, but fun.

The best part was that I was able to take him with my old 03A3 that my grandad built and carved the stock himself. Made a spine shot as he was moving up the mountain away from me at about 150 yards. Not bad for 65 year old iron.

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

That's sweet, where were you in AK?

One thing I love about firearms is the history they can hold, it's awesome to have that kind of weapon passed down thru a family!

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

Nice, I'm going up there to hunt this next spring with some old Guard buddy out of Glenallen. Hope to get one as nice.

But it'd be hard to compete with your grandfather's rifle.

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

Congrats from Soldotna BlakeJ!! Looks like you caught a little snow over there. There's a few big blackies in that area aren't there? Did you travel down the Kenai Peninsula any farther than Hope?

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

thanks, no we didn't really have time to do much else. we were lucky to get out when we did, right when we got back to the truck the weather got really nasty.

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

Nice blackie, I have a good amount boot prints in that area. Most of my moose hunting decades ago was just over the hill to the south west when there was little hunting pressure and moose. I was never much of a blackie hunter but the area around Hope is loaded with bears, had many wonder into camps, some are quite large.

But I cannot believe you shot an animal in Alaska with a blued wood rifle! And an old one at that. Using grand dads rifle would have put a tear in my eye.

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

Yeah that was really cool being able to use that rifle. My buddy thought I was crazy too.

I can't imagine humping a moose out of that area, you might be a little crazy too!

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

Nice one, you up in AK for good or just to hunt? I moved up her from San Angelo Tx back in 1999 and never left. I love bear hunting too but caribou taste much better. Good bear Tex.

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

No I still live in Texas, but I usually go up there every year. Believe it or not my wife got one two years ago.

I think caribou is next. Gotta do that.

Nothing like a bou, not very nutritious but best tasting game meat there is.

I've got a few more at the house. I'll post them when I get home.

Re: My Alaska Mountain Black Bear

here are a few more pics from the hunt.

Our transportation to the cabin, going down the mountain was much easier than pushing it up....
