My beginner's setup - anything I've missed / done wrong?

Just put together my entry level gun setup for precision:

Savage 110 Tactical in 6.5 Creedmoor, 24” barrel
Sig Tango 4 4-24 x 50
Larue LT104 mount

I snagged the scope on clearance, and traded for the rifle, so not a bad overall price of admission.

Back and forth on a bipod vs shooting bag.

The mount might be too high (not sure it matters, but I'm 6'6). If it is, I'll swap it for lower rings.

Anything I’ve missed? In the long range / precision genre, I don't know enough to know what I don't know.

(I know, thread is useless without pics, but everything isn’t here yet....)

Definitely bipod. As far as ring height, it only matters that you can get comfortable behind the rifle. Back in the old days it was important to have a low height over bore because the scopes didn’t have as much travel in the , but in our moderne era we can give up a mil or two and get that perfect position behind the rifle.

Some sort of rear bag.

If you plan to compete there are other types of bags which are useful.

At some point you'll want to get a ballistic program, weather meter, and range finder.

Bipod for sure. Harris or Atlas are good places to start with Harris being the more economical option. Plus, if you want to go to something else they sell really well in the PX

There are about a million different options for rear bags out there. Start with sand/rice/beans in a sock. Make a couple different sizes and figure out what size works best for you. Then start looking at sizes if you want to buy a commercial bag.

Whether you plan to compete or not you should go to a match and shoot in it. You will learn more in one match about your rifle, how you shoot it, and what gear you may want in than you will in 1000 rounds from a bench.

There is more gear out there than you can shake a stick at. Some of it is great, other stuff is junk. As a new shooter it’s hard to know the difference. Besides learning about your shooting at a match, you will also have a chance to see gear in action and most people are more than happy to let you try it out. You’ll quickly learn what works and what doesn’t without the huge expense.

Good luck with your new rifle.

trash that mount. asap. and buy a pair of seekins rings or ARC if you can spring for them

show up to a match and finger bang everyone else's stuff. they wont mind.

bipod (i prefer atlas PSR or new cal gen 2. hate harris)
multi purpose bag. game changer, saracen/commanche, or solo sack. all serve well for positional and as rear bag

Advice from another tall guy; I'm 6'9".

Take steps to ensure your length of pull is correct. Mine is 16.5". Also, get up on your elbows when shooting from the prone position (bipod+rear bag). I've found that I'm much more comfortable in what seems like a very upright prone position, but my body type lends itself to that. As far as ring height, ensure that your head position is as level as possible. For a good sight picture, if you are wrenching your head down and to the right (assuming you are a right-handed shooter), then your cheekpad is too low on the stock and/or your rings are too low.

Seekins rings arrived. Need to get some longer butt pad screws so I can add more spacers, but here she is:
