Got one of the JC machining hide upper and lowers on the way which will be used for my first build. Got a couple of questions before I get started . . .

Lower Parts kits? Is there a real difference between them, ie dpms vs bushmaster vs stoner etc.

I live in a non-free state (ny) so any suggestions on fixed stocks other than the PRS and the A1,2,3s?

Barrels, who makes nice barrels with fixed flash suppresors or brakes? (stupid ny again)

Im on a budget, so options with a more reasonable price tag would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Re: My First AR Build

Barrel: noveske
Stock: ACE (seen a lot used in 3 gun and are well priced)
LPK: LWRC (my favorite mil spec items)

just my 2 cents... best of luck with the build

Re: My First AR Build

Yes, there's a difference in LPKs. The lower quality ones such as DPMS are more suspect to having out of spec parts. My favorite is the Daniel Defense LPK. Rumor has it they make them in house rather than just source parts. Additionally, it comes with the Magpul enhanced trigger guard.

You could take a look at ACE skeleton stocks for a fixed stock.

Re: My First AR Build

Thanks guys, I had an ACE on my Sig556 and like it a lot, but am debating over whether I want to use one on this rifle. I'm torn between a SASS or M4 style build. I'll probably end up using a PRS, but want to make sure I'm keeping my options completely open.

Keep the advice coming!

Re: My First AR Build

I'm in the same position as you right now.
Thinking Daniel Defense for the LPK and barrel. They seem to be good quality and their prices are reasonable.

I'm trying to stay in the "midrange" budget with high end tastes! Lol...

noveske are awesome though you pay to play, depends what you intend to do with the gun, is it a carbine or a SPR? varmit? etc

stock, i LOVE the sopmod LMT, for a long gun i like the PRS.

lower parts kit, yeah i would go with LWRC, LMT, etc go with a good brand you'll honestly get a better product.

i really like the norgon ambi mag release, and the battle arms ambi selector switch.

for a 14.5" with a fixed muzzle break look into battlecomps new 1.5" brake its really nice and will make you legal.
