My First Custom Rifle - Thank you LA Precision

I just got the rifle in last week and I could not be happier. It started out life as a 700P and I shot the factory gun for a good bit but the custom bug finally hit. A big factor was that I have a can on order and to shoot sub sonics I needed a faster twist than the factory 1:12. My thinking was if I had to rebarrel anyway, it would be stupid to not have the action trued and might as well just do a full blown gun. The can is 10" long so when that will be on the gun it will be like having a 29" barrel on it. I did not want to go with say a 24" barrel then end up with 34" with the can.

It was built by William Roscoe, who as most of you know, owns LA Precision Rifles. It AMAZED me how tight the thread protector is to the barrel. You literally cannot see the break when it is mated against the barrel. See the last two pics for what I am talking about.

For anyone thinking of a build and not sure who to go with let me share my experience. He has always been helpful in answering my questions and making suggestions. Also he delivered the gun in the time frame that he gave me when I dropped off my parts.

He has also been working with me in my load development. I called him and asked him about some components and recommended loads and such and let him know what groups I was getting and what components I had been using. He recommended a different powder and I stated that I was going to load some up and head to the range. Well that night I get a call from him to see how the range session went. Now that might not mean much to some people but to me that meant alot. To me is shows not only does he take pride in his work and delivers a fantastic rifle, but he goes the extra mile to make sure you are getting the most out of the gun that is possible. He has been VERY helpful in steering me in the right directions on load development. In this day and age of everyone just out to make a buck to me by him calling it showed me alot about his character.

So without further ado.

Re: My First Custom Rifle - Thank you LA Precision

That's a nice rifle! The thread protector had me doing a double take. Can't wait for mine to show up!

Re: My First Custom Rifle - Thank you LA Precision

Very nice rifle. I bet it shoots even better than it looks too. I have a "budget" build going on right now, but am saving my pennies for full tilt build similar to yours.
Congratulations!

Re: My First Custom Rifle - Thank you LA Precision

nice rig!!! How About a range report. I am saving up my pennies for a build. What is the weight on that rig? Glad to see another satisfied customer. Can't wait for mine.

Re: My First Custom Rifle - Thank you LA Precision

Well so far the range report is I have found a load that has shot .3's at a hundred but that same load was just over 2" at three hundred.

The good news is this is with a 175 MK doing just over 2600 fps. So they will get to a thousand but I would like to shrink those 300 yard groups a bit. I am going to try a different powder and see if that makes a difference and also do some more testing with the same powder and vary the length.

I was always of the opinion that the longer barrel the better but I might have to eat those words. I am getting the velocity I wanted in 19" and the gun is very handy. So far I am very pleased. I will update once I find THE LOAD that shoots at 100 and 300 yards with 0.5 MOA.

I know this is kinda back from the dead but I found this post looking for a different old thread I had posted in. I hope more gun porn is not a bad thing. I found "The Load" to be:

Lapua Brass
43.7 IMR-4895
CCI BR2
175 SMK.
2.091 base to ogive
Work up to this load as it is a bit over book spec. It clover leafs at 100 and my 300 yard testing was just under 1.600" center to center 5 rounds with a "flyer" and 0.850" 4 of the 5 if the "flyer" was thrown out.

The can is a TigerShark and man it is HUNGRY! Thanks Daivd aka Shark Suppressors

Very nice indeed! I have something in the works fairly similar to those specs and was wondering: 1) What's the overall weight with bipod/glass/mag? 2) What's the actual diameter of that barrel contour at the muzzle? Thanks for the info and great looking stick!
