Is a DJI Mini 4. It's a freakin hell of a lot of fun to play with.

The more I read, the more I see that the FCC wants to register my drone and have certificates available in case LE wants to see it.

What do I actually HAVE to do to fly it for nothing other than pictures of places the gf and I visit, and using it to spot shots at distances over 600yds?

The DJI Mini 4 is definitely a lot of fun to fly! For flying it recreationally, you'll need to register it with the FAA since it's over the 0.55 lbs mark. The registration's pretty straightforward and gives you a number to stick on the drone. As long as you're keeping it under 400 feet and staying away from restricted areas, you’re good to go. I’d also recommend checking out any local regulations or park rules, just to be sure. I’ve flown mine on trips before, and as long as you keep it safe and respect others’ space, it’s usually a smooth experience.

I have registered the drone. The problem is when I try to unlock an area to fly it (my yard), it won't let me unlock it and just keeps looking and telling me to unlock the area.

Are you in restricted space? You need to investigate that. You are probably being geofenced for some reason (airport nearby, critical infrastructure, etc). Or there is some setting you need to redo. There are DJI and other drone forums that can help you out with this and give you some detailed guidance.

I didn’t think I was restricted. I flew it the morning after I got it, but it won’t fly now.

The DJI no-fly-zones expand well outside of the FAA zones. Not sure of the process to unlock the drone/controller, but supposedly it does work. Welcome to the world of DJI and software updates

Maybe you should have looked into some shit before buying a drone. Call me crazy

Ah yes, yet another old profile with a very low round count

Not sure if this is still the case but I seem to recall having the lowest tier of the HAM/Amateur Radio license had some crossover with the drones and being able to operate at a different frequency or maybe it was a higher power. My HAM license is still active but I haven't dabbled with drones yet but may be something to look into at least.

Happy flying either way!

Interesting...there are a couple of "warning zones" right aroun where I live, a couple of "enhanced zones" not too far away. And of course "no fly" zones over Ft. Bragg...no surprise there LOL
This morning, the Columbus PD told me I live too close to the airport to fly it. Apparently, living three miles away from the airport is too close to play with a drone. Who'd have thought it?

Yes. Usually there is a blackout area around the airport and a "cone" that goes up and outward from there, depending on approaches, etc. That's why I mentioned it earlier. I'm the chairman of the local airport board and we have been reviewing this concerning drones and building codes for new construction around the airport.

You wouldn't believe the number of people that go to the parking lot of the airport to fly drones. It is a freaking problem. We design our drones at the office within the airport no fly zone and build them there, but there aint no way I'm allowing anyone to fly on the property. The risk is too damn high. Why others can't figure this out is beyond me.

Actually, I would believe it. Benning had an issue with people flying drones out on Fryar drop zone (Airborne school) and other places on base. It took the military police detaining more than a few soldiers to get the point across.

Thanks for the info about the airport "cone".

Yup. Had a similar experience at a couple bases. One where drones were authorized to fly everywhere but "over there", and it was clearly stated in all preflight meetings. A certain group decided that rules were to be ignored. Until the federal suits came with a quickness, then shit got real fucking serious for them and the RSO and MP's were the least of their problems. Another time drones were flown without authorization by a third party in approach airspace. That too was a bad deal with real consequences.

Don't fly where you don't belong and obey the rules. Period. Ignoring this can be a FAFO an order of magnitude above anything you would ever want to deal with. Yet somehow people still do it thinking the rules are stupid and don't apply to them.

Just posting a video online can get you buttfucked if they choose to from what I read. I looked into getting a 5” freestyle drone pretty seriously a while back.

Anything under 250g doesn’t need registration either.
