I just got back from the range where i shot about 20 rounds with a mosin nagant that was given to me yesterday. This is the only rifle I own, but after today my wish list just grew by about 12. As far as performance I didn't hit the 100 yard steel plate target once, however the tip of the barrel need to be re-crowned(i think that is the correct term) and was told that is probably the reason for the really bad accuracy. So I will be droping it off this week to get worked on, and back out the range next weekend I hope.

I was planing on putting some work into this rifle, but plan on re-crowning and shooting some more before I make that decision.

I do know I will be listing items on ebay tonight in an effort to get some cash for a new rifle, preferably something I can shoot alot, and not be wishing I hadn't the next day, lol.

I think I am going to love this sport, we had a blast, and can't wait to do it again. Thanks for listening to my long rant. lol [img:left]

Why do you think the crown need work? Can you see anything

There's a good chance the POI is different than the POA. Sometimes the guns shoot closer to the POA with the bayonet on/extended. I don't have a single Mosin that is zero'd to the iron sights. Some are off by a decent amount.

Good idea is to take a big piece of something like newsprint or old fashioned butcher paper and put that up to see just how far POA/POI are. What you might also find somewhere are one of those shelf liner pieces of skinny cardboard that the big box stores put underneath skids of merchandise. If you can't keep it on that, well, free is free. The bayo comment is especially true of M44s.

Before you drop it off for any work, I would suggest determining a few things. First, as was already mentioned, make sure that it's sighted in properly. Most Mosins were sighted with the bayonet attached which can greatly effect the POI. Not to mention that some of them were apparently never really sighted in at all after refurbishment (assuming yours is a refurb, but still...shtuff happens!).

Second, has it already been counter-bored (this is common)? If you're not seeing rifling at the muzzle, this could be the reason why. So, it really can't be recrowned in this case, without cutting the barrel back, also, or counter-boring it even further.

Third, are the action screws tight? This is another common problem with Mosins (well, one of many that can usually be easy fixes). Be sure the action screws are tight before shooting it, EVERY time you shoot it. They can work themselves loose, as they seem to have a mind of their own.

Like Veer G said , try to get it "on the paper" with a big sheet of cardboard or plywood . I'd start at 25 and 50 yards to get acquainted with the rifle before moving on to 100 . If this is your first rifle , start small , and read the stickies on basic marksmanship . You have to build on a solid foundation if you plan on sticking with it . Be safe and have fun .

It's always easy if you have a berm behind your targets, to place a target on the berm itself. It can be anything...
At our range, they'll throw up old bowling pins, paper cups, doesn't matter- just something you can see from the distance you're shooting.

Have someone spot for you, and see where the dirt flies...

We do this with scoped rifles to walk the scope onto the paper with just a few shots at 100 yards. It'll do the same thing with irons...even if you're five feet from the target, someone will still be able to spot your hit so you can adjust accordingly until you get close enough to hit paper.

the reason i was thinking re-crowing is becuase that was suggest by the guy who gave me the gun,and a buddy, i'll try to get pics up here to try to get more opinions.

part of me wants to keep it orginal, but since 4 people i work with have them, i almost want to "sporterize"(think that is the term i am looking for" it.

got a bunch of stuff in my shopping card on amazon, and the total is right where i would like to be minus scope. here's what i got in it, ati stock, uncle buck quick disconect swivel mounts, 550 cord to make custom sling, $90 free shipping only think that will change is if i get the new stock, i'll go get a bipod, and will probably stick to open sites for a bit, then maybe(not likely, but maybe) get a scope later on, that attaches to the rear site mount, so i will be able to restore all back to factory if i choose to

so what you guys think?
also what's good to clean it with, saw youtube videos of water and simple green? is this ok? there was no coselin(i know spelling is WAY off) on it.

also the bolt moves ok, but while shooting it's alittle rough when re-chambering a round after firing.

Not sure what you're asking...
If you're shooting the surplus ammo, it is corrosive- so you need to flush the barrel with hot water (or windex, or other crap that everyone swears by) immediately after shooting.

Then use the bore cleaner of your choice at intervals of your choosing. Do a search on this, there's ten million threads and no reason to go into routing rifle cleaning again...

There is probably still cosmoline in the chamber. Google "Mosin sticky barrel", there's a good vid on youtube on dealing with it.
Suggest you start with a good spraying of brake cleaner in the chamber to see if it solves it. Apparently the rifle was cleaned before you got it, but no telling how good a job was done.

If the bolt itself is sticking, you should disassemble it completely and make sure there's no cosmoline residing inside.

has anyone sporterized theirs? i am curious if there are things you would have done different? or things you really like?

i was just checking out some of the boyds stocks and am thinking i might go that route, in the peppered color monto carlo sytle, looks sharp

Just do what he says and get the cosmoline out of EVERYTHING, especially the guts of the bolt. I boil the bolt parts on milsurps and then use mineral spirits and a toothbrush. Steam works, too.

I'm a bit "old school" on this......people who "sporterize" vintage rifles should have their testicles whipped with blunt and rusty razor wire!

By all means build up a rifle up using a vintage action of your choice (examples of which others have posted here)...but please don't hack up a decent shooting and complete vintage rifle to do it.

Keep the Moisin as is, use it, shoot the nuts off it, get to know it BUT keep it original.

If/when you decide 100% that the sport is for you, get some cash together to buy a second, more modern rifle.

Chances are the Moisin will hold it's value better if not <span style="text-decoration: line-through">"bubbarized"</span>.... "sporterized"!

while i agree to a certain degree about keeping the rifle orginal, i also differ as well. after doing some research and learning more about this rifle, i know that the one i have is refrub, i have also read that even though all the number match, that it was common for them to be restamped when refurbing them to make all the number match. if this was an orginal war used rifle, it would be staying 100% stock(i do want to find one of these). but due to the number of these that were made, i think and feel if you choose to sporterize or modernize it in a tasteful way then that will be ok. i am sure what is tasteful to me might be different from you and that is ok

Well, since it was made in 1942, it is highly likely that it is a "war used" rifle. I know there were millions of them made, but the same can be said for K98 Mausers. The prices on matching originals are now anywhere from $1500-$4000+ and I'm not even getting into the rare ones, yet. The Russian Capture guns that were rebuilt from mixed parts were as low as $75, not even a decade ago. Now, they're selling for over $500 and you don't see any vendors that have them on a regular basis, anymore. Why? All because a bunch of people thought it would be a good idea to cut them up. I can see why people did this fifty years ago. That's all they had available as an affordable hunting rifle. Things have changed. With modern manufacturers producing rifles what will shoot sub-MOA for around $250, there's no real reason to destroy a piece of history that's likely going to perform even worse by doing so.

joop- thanks for the info, i was just under the impression that if it had the square with a line throught it marking, that it was a refurb, and not a used in war model, this might change things some if it was war used, i'll do some research first, if it is, then it will defiantly be staying as is, and will be looking for the rest of the pieces.

also on a side note, it isn't complete, there is no banoet, cleaning rod, rear barrel ring, and cleaning kit, this rifle was giving to me as is

The refurb marks won't tell you whether or not it was used in combat. They refurbed almost all of their remaining rifles, after the war. But, given it's production date, the chances are good that it was used by a soldier in some capacity. They had how many millions of men/women to arm, after all? 1942 was the height of the nazi invasion and most of these rifles went directly from the arsenals into the hands of front line soldiers, as fast as they could make them. Most of them were made at Izhevsk. The Tula made rifles are less common, as Tula was concentrating more effort on different types of arms, such as machine guns, handguns and SVT rifles. In late 1941, the Tula arsenal had to pick up and move east, as the Germans were nearly at their doorstep. A 1942 Tula rifle is very significant as a collector piece, as it would be one of the first ones made after they were back up and running.

You can find the cleaning rod and rear band, easy enough. Hell, if you promise me that you won't cut this rifle up, I have a band and bayonet that I'll send you, free of charge!

joop- just posted pics on the orginal post. please don't get me wrong, i don't want to chop it up just to chop it up and add all this tatical stuff, that's not me, just a plain simple scope, something i can take bacon and deer hunting. i do defiantly want to do a full restore on one of these as i think they are awesome, and are history. actually think because of this gun, i might try and build one rifle from all militaries through all conflicts, i think that would make one really cool collection

on a side note the rifle needs recrowing, called the local gunsmith he said about $40 for the recrown weather i keep it same lenght or cut it down

Nice idea if you have deep enough pockets and a lot of space.

But one hell of a task.....I don't think I've ever seen a collection (even in a museum) that has achieved this.

Maybe start off slowly by concentrating on one country or one maker...or one conflict or one century??

If it's an ex-sniper, you'll be able to see remnants of the screws on the inside of the receiver. In 1942, they made mostly the long side rail type for the larger PEM scope. By the end of the year, they were starting production of the PU, which is a smaller rail/scope (the one you most commonly see). Here's what an ex-PU would look like:

If it were a PEM, the holes would be closer together (confusing, I know, since the rail is larger, but that's the way they did it. A Tula PEM would only have one hole visible in this area, since they didn't drill the pins all the way through like Izhevsk did, only the screws).

Judging by the rough texture of the receiver, I'm guessing that it's not an ex-sniper. During the height of wartime production, they cut corners on finishing, especially at Izhevsk. However, their snipers typically had a more polished finish on the receiver. I have seen a couple that were left rough, however.

Back to the crown; can you see rifling all the way to the end? When you put a cartridge in the muzzle, bullet first, how much of it goes in? Forty dollars isn't bad for a crown job, but I would be sure it actually needs one, first. If it's already been counterbored, it's probably fine.

it's not an ex-sniper i just ran home for lunch to check.

i'll try to take pic of the end of the barrel, so if i am understanding correctly i should take a round and out it in the end of the barrel to see how much of the tip goes into the barrel? the only reason it was suggested to get a recrown is that the end of the barrel is in pretty rough shape

if this is the case then when i stick the round in the end of the barrel and look through it, i can see lots of light. if this is wrong, well then i just looked like an idiot on the internet, oh well part of the learning curve i guess, lol

also upon further inspection, there is rust i can see at the end of the barrel, i am guessing that is not a good thing, will be cleaning that as soon as i get back to work

What you're looking for, is how far the bullet goes in. If it goes up to the neck of the case, or swallows the neck, it's been counterbored. Also, if cb'd, you won't be able to see any rifling at the end of the muzzle. Counterbores can vary in depth from about 1/4", to 1.5". They did this to restore the crown (albeit on the inside of the barrel) when they were worn out. The crowns would usually be worn from cleaning with the steel rod, from the muzzle. A big no-no. Always clean them from the breach with a long, one piece rod. That is, unless you find yourself in need of cleaning while you're in a muddy trench with a bunch of nazis moving in.

Put the butt of the rifle on the floor, pointing the muzzle straight up. Push the bullet into the muzzle until it stops, then take a picture of it (be sure you're using a 7.62x54r, to get the best idea of wear). I should be able to tell from the picture and type of ammo used, approximately what the wear is to the crown, or if it's been counterbored.

i couldn't agree more about the cleaning. i ran a bore snack through the bore several times, and all looked ok. i ran the bore snack through because that is what was recommended because i was using non-corrosive ammo. but looking back my buddy shot it a couple times, so i am wondering if he used his ammo, and if it was the corrosive stuff. needless to say i will be cleaning as soon as i get back to work, good think i bought a cleaning kit this morning

It hasn't been counterbored and, yes, it would appear that it has been shot with corrosive ammo and not properly cleaned. Bore snakes can work, but I'm still a fan of the rod and patch, especially when using corrosive ammo. You'll hear a hundred different opinions on how to clean after corrosive, but the most important part is that you get it clean. Period.

Judging from how much bullet is showing, I think the crown is probably fine. I've got rifles with a lot more wear that shoot great. I would save your $40, for now. Spend it on a Tipton or Dewey cleaning rod, instead. Just get that bore clean, asap.

i just went throught with a bore snake, and cleaning rode with some hoppe's cleaning solution, i cleaned it untill the pads were coming out almost white. since i am going to the range tomorrow is there anyting i can do to try to hit my target, as i recall last weekend i went, shot 20 rounds and didn't hit my target once. this time i'll start at the 25 or 50 yard target and not the hundred, so i am sure that will help some. is there a simple way to site these in. defiantly will hold off on the recrown then untill i get some more rounds fired over the next couple weeks, and see if i can't get it shooting right


is the counterbore something i should get done, or just leave it the way it is?

1. Before you do anything at the range, make sure the action screws are tight.

2. As you already mentioned, start closer to the target to see where you're hitting. The front sight will likely need to be drifted. Without some sort of specialized tool to do this, you're left with the mallet/punch method (which is all I use but hard to do at the range, since some of them are pretty tight and may require putting the barrel in a vise).

3. Don't be surprised if it shoots high. Remember that a.) the rear sight is calibrated in hundreds of meters (not yards) and b.) Soviet doctrine, as I'm told, was to "aim for the belt buckle". Don't know if that's true, but being that most of them shoot 3-12 inches high at 100 yards, it wouldn't surprise me. If you think about what it was used for, it's a lot easier to be shooting high at 100 and not have to adjust, then to be messing with your sight in the face of the enemy at 200+ meters, when you could just hold on/over.


If you can, post pictures of your target, once you're hitting. Take note of the ammo used, range, etc. We can likely determine any other issues after that, but I think you'll be fine, once you figure out where you're hitting.

thanks again, i'll be sure to take good notes at the range. i am actually going to start a log book of all expenses and range trips just to monitor my progress and bank account, lol.

i've got 40 rounds non-corrosive that i'll either shoot first(since i think this will be my primary ammo), but i also have about 140 rounds of corrosive that was given to me, so i think i'll try to burn through some of that, then when it's gone, it's gone and i'll stick the non-corrosive, hek might even start hand loading.

The corrosive stuff isn't going to hurt your rifle if you clean it properly . I keep a small spray bottle of ammonia glass cleaner in my range bag just for the corrosive stuff . A shot or two of glass cleaner will neutralize the corrosive salts and you can clean as normal . No harm no foul . Pun intended .

Even the newer milsurp stuff has mercuric primers , so it can be hard to get away from , even with "clean" 54r .

To correct Joop just a little , the rear sight is calibrated for arshins which is an old russian cubit for length . An arshin is equal to .7777 yards or .7112 meters .

The last picture shows not just a really rusty bore, and I would call that banged up crown anything but OK...

But, maybe my standards are too strict for milsurps...

I would clean that barrel ASAP...it may take a lot to get through that rust, can't tell if just surface, or if it's extending into any pitting.

When you get it as good as you can (or care to), be sure to run a lightly oiled patch through the bore as a last step...

I understand folks concern , but these rifles had hundreds , if not 1000 down the pipe back when the ammo quality was at it's worst and then stored for 50+ years . Most bores on 91-30's are in very good shape considering the history . I clean at the range when shooting the nasty stuff , but if you wait a few hours , I can see where the hot water would help . Treat it like a muzzleloader .

I wouldn't get it counter bored . I would slug the barrel and find out the true diameter . These ol mosins are all over the board and great results can be had by hand loading with the proper bullet diameter . Slugging tutorial ...

Wrong... Joop is right. The Russians dropped the Arshin and converted the Nagant to Meters in 1924/25.
