I had my first few groups with the "budget" Remington LTR .308 build, thanks to everyone along the way. I bought everything except the scope and pack thru great HIDE members.
Well it was cold and rainy (no surprise i am outside of seattle). I was shooting two AR builds (one is flawless and the other needs to check gas tube alignment).
Any ways, got to zero the LTR/scope and was having very impressive groups (with no sand bags):
Specs:
Stock Remington 700 LTR .308
Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 SF with MIL-DOT
(currently nikon stock scope caps, not to happy with during use)
EGW 20 MOA base
Super Sniper Low Rings
Harris 1A2-BR
Eagle Stock Pack (in Ranger Green of course)
Sorry iPHONE pics, man it is a great camera for indoors and low light
The LTR is a solid feeling gun, but weighs about the same as my model 70 winchester 7mm rem mag. What else is there to say about this great gun, 98% of you know more about this gun then i probably do. I was going to get a SPS tactical and buy a used HS stock, but came across a nice guy selling this LTR before my last deployment and had to go with it. This was cheaper than buying the Tactical and buying a stock. Original remington trigger and great flawless packerized finish.
The Nikon Monarch was my choice because of the clarity of the glass, mil-dot reticle, side focus, not to heavy, and a great warranty (oh and the price). Doesn't have target/tactical turrets, but they can be had for a decent price later. My take great scope, very bright, and solid. I am a big fan of NIKON glass and it doesn't have the bells and whistles other scopes have, but for the dollar it suits me just fine. I will get some butler creek caps, i was originally fine with the cheap nikon caps until i needed to use them. They are flemsy cheap caps that slide as you open and don't open crisply. They were free, but no brainer for $8 a piece for butler caps.
Harris Bipod is what it is great solid base (as stated multiple times showed up and no sand bags) first harris and for the money why buy anything else, not to expensive (especially in the for sale section) and solid platform.
EGW base had a little frustration. I didn't have the screws and EGW sold them to me for $3.00 no biggy, but then the cheapest shipping option was $8.00. Called them and they charged me much less on shipping and just shipped it USPS 1st Class which they dont usually do. THANKS EGW. Sorry, this is a great solid base that will give me the adjustments that the NIKON loses out to in its competition. Solid base and works well.
Super sniper rings are not the best out there and not the most talked about, but for this budget build they are exceptional. I like them a lot, they feel solid, lock up well, and look right at home on a budget Light Tactical build.
Eagle Stock Pack is a must. Looks great, feels great on the cheek, and has that added little space for storage and rounds. Thanks to Triad for hooking this up for me.
As stated, i didn't get to have any sand bags. The range i usually go to for most of my rifle shooting has them. I tried a new place and they did not. Like the range i just need get some for myself.
Shot Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain (two boxes) and all of the groups were about the same. Also shot some HSM match and Hornady match both in 168 gr, they were about as good as the FGMM (shot a box a piece of them). I know most will do 5 shot groups, some 3, and even a rarer few that will prove there guns with 10 shot groups. I shoot 6 out of habit. This by no means is winning any awards amongst this crowd, but I like it and it is fun to shoot. The LTR is a great shooter and with the Nikon it is light enough to run around with in the field. Going to do some more trigger time and with sand bags just to see how well it does, but most of my shooting will be bipod I think.
As stated this is a 6 shot group, 100 yards, 35-40 degrees in the rain, and sorry no cool calipers yet. Not the results of $3-4000 build, but I have about a grand into this LTR total thanks to everyone here and I am happy. I think this can be a sub .75 gun with bags. Not thinking sub .5 gun, but i am not a sub .5 shooter yet. No 6 shot group was better or worse then this, pretty consistant. I have one 10 shot group that i think i didn't keep or can't find right now, will post if i do. Oh and not the best targets for this. I posted colored push pins for this day (no better targets) tried to shoot the pins and if I did tried to shoot the bullet. Otherwise i couldn't find a good aimpoint. Problems were when i shot the pin (not that that is a problem) and then just had to pick the hole so shoot at. I will bring better targets out next time.
just noticed the ruler is made in china, hopefully it is a real "inch" measurement and not a fake
