My Ruger 96/22 WMR - A rare gun?

Looking online for current prices of a Ruger 96/22 WMR lever gun and I find it going for over $700. My GOD! I bought it for only $250. new.

What is with these prices? Is it that much in demand by collectors?

I'm currently putting a Green Mountain octagonal barrel on it and a custom laminated stock to match my custom Savage 99 C. Of course I'll save the original barrel and stock.

Ive been seeing beat up 96's in 22lr in local shops going for 400+

Ruger makes rifles for a few years - after they become real popular, they stop making them.

It's just like the old boat paddles. Beat up SS 77/22's in 22wmr are selling for over $700 on gunbroker. In my area, most shops can't get rid of them at $350!
