I work hard to keep my 3 mile time in check. A knee injury has kept me off the treadmill for a couple weeks and won't allow me back on for 6 more. Just learned the Navy allows an elliptical machine to be used in place of a timed run. Can any of you guys help me calculate what intensity / speed on the elliptical equates to as a timed run?

Thanks,
-Chris

Re: Navy PFT

I shot your question upstairs to some of the Navy guys.
As of one year ago this is what a retired Sr Chief has to say about that:

The navy pft is 1.5 miles. The choices are run or swim. You are either able to do it or you aren't and only a Doctor can waive the run/swim portion.

Re: Navy PFT

ArcticLight,

Thanks for looking into it! Here is a link to what I am seeing. No about about it, I'd rather run. Unfortunately, that's not a viable option at this time.

Worst part is my martial art (something I am very passionate about) is what caused the injury. I only mention it because I believe I read somewhere that you might know something about martial arts

Re: Navy PFT

What art do you study?

I'm in Shotokan Karate - last week ws my teaching week, maybe just a good solid work out tonight!

I've busted ribs a few times so I know about injuries!!

Heal yourself, don't over due it...:)

Re: Navy PFT

Submission Grappling, my ilk is Brazilian JiuJitsu minus the gi. My roots are in the 10th Planet System. That's where the knee problems came from.

Based on what Google has to say, it sounds like the Navy elliptical thing is based around going "all out" for 12 minutes. Think I'll spend 24 minutes on it & run my results through their calculator twice.

For me, teaching JiuJitsu is every bit as satisfying as learning. Do you find the same is true for you in Shotokan?

Re: Navy PFT

Caveman,

I am an active duty Navy Corpsman, the current PFT standards can be accessed here:
http://www.navy-prt.com/navadmin293-06.html
http://www.navy-prt.com/navadmin011-07.html
http://www.navy-prt.com/elliptical.html
http://www.navy-prt.com/elliptical-bike.html

Also, the new instruction allows bike as well. I did the official bike PRT last cycle. Here's how it went:

Bike was programed for age and weight (38, 188lbs) I selected level 12 and kept an 80RPM pace for 11 mins, on the 12th minute I bumped the resistance level to 13 and cycled at 100rpm. Result: Excellent Medium. (1.5 mile run equivelent of 11:08)

Hope this helps.

Absolutely, it's like learning all over again, and it makes you do it right so you can teach it right!

Lets me see lil mistakes and I catch my own that way too!

Would love to larn JuiJitsu but I'm not sure if my body could take being thrown down, seem to have issues when I get thrown down hard LOL always end up in a chiro office a few days later..

Re: Navy PFT

Hansii, thanks for the links. I've never even looked at the standards as school ones were always different than fleet. I didn't know the swim compared that well to the run - everyone has always played it up like it's a killer. Don't get me wrong, a 7:00 500 is no joke, but it's a heck of a lot easier than a 9:00 1.5mi and feels a whole lot better on the hamstrings. Thinking if I get some more pool time in on the weekends I may do that this time.

Not sure what to say. I'll go by my command's CFL and see if he has the conversion charts on paper. If so, I'll get a copy and post it here.

Han,

That would be great! I've scoured the web looking for those conversion charts to no avail.

Again, much thanks!
