The learning curve may be steep but it is also long...I had to break down some .308 W because of a measurement error in the dispenser. Started neck sizing the primed and pulled cases in a modified Lee Collet die (cut off the depriming pin). I noticed that in some cases the case will slip loosely over the center rod and slip easily out, and some would have a significant drag going in and coming out. I realized that the phenomenon was due to differing neck thicknesses. I tried it with fired cases just with the Lee die without success. Then I tried using my usual .336 bushing die on fired cases, then using the collet die as a gauge. That worked. For those reloaders who wish to sort by neck thickness, but don't want to spend $150 to see if it helps their shooting, a $15 Lee Collet die may serve to separate the sheep from the goats...not perfectly, but will eliminate some of the variation. Re: Neck thickness gauge

Got one. Just a suggestion for those who want to play with a cheaper way to begin. (In my case it wasn't a primary feat but a result of having to re-neck size befor re-reloading.) Although the ball mike prices have come way down with China in the act. ENCO has good pricing.

Re: Neck thickness gauge

If somebody wants a good cheap one they need to contact ken from K&Mtools he was selling Mitutoyo ball mics which he machines the indicator at a 45% and leaves about half the bottom or he ordered them like that. He must of ordered these years ago as he was selling them for under 100$.
