I've been looking at 22lr for my next project for this winter.... Ruger 10/22 prices are getting sick, if you can even find one.
My question is: what is Available out there at a reasonable price ($250 or less) that is reliable, accurate and fun to upgrade (parts are available)? I'm looking at Remington 597HB, and Savage. I'm out of date on who else is making quality 22lr at reasonable prices. Opinions wanted!! thanks

+1 on the savage, with the added note that their 22LR magazines occasionally need a little modification to feed properly. had to take apart two mags to put both springs back in one. Other than that, my savages have both been laser-accurate out to stupid distances. my 93 cost around 200 bucks, just rolling iron sights, and its my go-to gun when I go fooling around in the forest during the winter (when the bears are awake, 45-70 all the way).

I think the bears would be smarter to stay hibernating...a 45-70 is big enough to take just about anything moving on the planet. Bet she kicks like a mule...a bit more than I want my son to practice with! Looked at a Ruger 10/22 Takedown..like the ability to store in small places...but not at the prices we have here in Oregon. So I'm back to square one.

I'd buy a CZ 455 Varmint in 17 hmr

then buy the 22 adapter, pin and magazine
then order a Lilja match grade straight cylinder 0.900 22lr barrel.
That would give you one heck of an accurate and fun combination.

Pillar and bed the receiver, bed the balance point of the barrel
and you end up with a seriously accurate rimfire rifle.


I know, more than $250, but if you want a project...make it a good one.

I have a Savage FV-SR and a Ruger take down. The Ruger shoots circles around the Savage all day long. I've tried every ammunition I can get my hands on through both rifles, in price ranging from $1.50/box to $12/box. The best I can get out of the Savage is around 3" groups at 50 yards shooting from bipod with rear bag. The Ruger is doing 1.5" with so-so optics and a pretty crappy factory trigger. Both are a little higher than your $250 price point.
Chances are I probably got a crappy gun from the factory, and from past experience Savage would take care of the problem if I took the time to ship it back. I'm pretty sure their 1" guarantee applies to their heavy barreled rimfires as well.

dang, sorry to hear that, evo. My savage TR is amazingly accurate, to the point that shooting any closer than 150 meters is just not fun anymore. if you haven't already, try a box of Wolf Match Extra. That stuff is amazing. Good to hear that the take-down 10/22 is doing the job.

and yeah, I've built some handloads for my 45/70 that have been called "Horrifying" by my friends. the "Carry the Elephant Gun" season happens to be the part of the year when there is no small game hunting, so I'm not really too upset about it. besides, I've got my bear tag. and roast bear is delicious.

Some of the comments on the Savage I was looking at are making me think I need to expand my search. Remington has the 597 HB series....Anybody have feed back on any issues / accuracy on the Remingotn 597 HB?

Don't let the comments fool you, the Savage is a great gun! I've seen them shoot extremely well. However I went with the Marlin XT-22, the only reason I did this is because I did not like the factory savage synthetic stock. Both are great rifles, I've cut and re-crowned my Marlin and at a match the other day I put two 10/22s and two Savage MKII TR to shame. It was only at 50ft but I was putting 5 shots in one hole on the X every shot.

Like I said I have re-crowned and shortened the barrel and bedded the stock. Both are great rifles and I would be proud to own either of them!
CZ also makes a great rifle although a little more spendy.

I got my list down to the final three rifle selection. My "needed" spec's for THIS go around are 1) threaded barrell - for all the possibile goodies to add later! 2) a mount or rail system included from the factory...ok, so I'm getting lazy. 3) semi-auto...I know I'm going to hear it from the old-school crowd. But I want my son to have fun and play some. We can get serious with ammo control (waste not..want not) via bolt action later. I see another .22 in our future. 4) heavy barrell - accuracy and I like the look!
So, here they are (I'm looking hard at these) Savage 64 TRR-SR (#45200); Remington 597 HB (#80877) no threads on barrel, but cheap enough to have them cut; Remington 597 HB (#80912) digital camo...but cant find one anywhere near me to save my life (crap). NEED your thoughts / opinions folks!! I can take it!!

I just found a ruger 10/22 laminate stock practically brand new for $230 at cabelas. and they rang it up for 200... not complaining one bit!

I found a local gunsmith that will cut threads for me on the Rem. 597 for $60..seems to be a good price. Had one other quote to do it for $75.
Nobody in my area has a Remington 597 HB #80877. The gun I WAS looking at Remington HB #80912 has not been made by Remington (last quarter or) this quarter. That was straight from a Remington (home office) sales rep. Something is not right!??
So I decided to look into local Savage FV-SR availability.. Got lucky, a local store had a few in Washington state. They are tranfering to a nearby Oregon store. Got a GREAT price $209.99...best price I have seen Anywhere; local or internet!! Already checking out the Boyd Tacticool stock website! We'll see how this all comes together!!

just my opinion, and I suspect most shootists will agree, start off with a bolt action. if you ingrain at an early age to "have fun and play" with a semi auto, it will take away from the fundamentals of marksmanship that are so important.

it creates the mentality that its ok to miss because you have a quick follow up shot.

I'm not old school by any means. I grew up shooting a single shot open sight marlin that taught me patients for a quality shot.

teach the fundamentals early and often and it will make the bolt immensely more enjoyable/rewarding to shoot than an auto.

it was for me anyways. good luck on your search. I would recommend Savage Mark II FV SR

if you must go auto, go 10/22. Super easy to upgrade at your pace later into a super accurate little rifle

I have a Savage mark 2 fv-sr coming my way this week. The factory stock is of "limited quality". I've researched the Boyd tacticool stock...but have read a number of folks having structural failures and they end up bedding (pillar) the stock. I would rather avoid the structural issue; and having to bed a second stock.and even then may have to get a third stock. Not sure that Choate makes a rimfire stock..?? What about other companies?? would have any info? on Choate, B&C, or some others

Cheaper than Dirt has the FV-SR for $200.23. I will have one, and a EVO SS. I was looking at a used 10/22 plus trigger job($70), bolt work($35), and barrel for a subsonic rimfire. 10/22 got expensive fast.

Well, I got the call tonight. My Savage Fv-SR has arrived at my local retailer. Now I have to decide which after-market stock to put on it. I'm not sure I want to deal with bedding a new Boyd's tacticool...only to have it fracture. Any other after market stocks I should be looking at? I would like to keep under $250 for whatever new stock I end up with. Does Choate make a stock for a Savage mark 2 FV-SR? What about a
B & C ? I'm not up on my aftermarket stocks for Savage! Anybody have thoughts or ideas??

Look at boyds stocks there are several different models to choose from. I know you said you want to keep it under $250 but Manners makes or used to make stocks that fight the TR. If you could get an FV-SR in a manners that would be awesome! But if you're wanting to keep the price down I'd look at boyds.
