I have had it with my crappy Remington 700 SPS Varmint internal ammo compartment. It's simply not reliable in its feeding and even loading new ammo into it. I contacted Remi and they strongly discouraged me to mod the rifle to use detachable mags. Reason: loss of rigidity and frame integrity issues.

I see that quite a few of you have mod your Remi's to use CDI bottom and detachable mags.

</span>
[1]Are the CDI bottom reliable? Are they as rigid as the original Remi's? Anyone compared the two in terms of the materials used and rigidity?

[2]Is the installation of the CDI bottom pretty straightforward or do I need to modify anything on the Rem700?

[3]Also, what mags do you recommend besides the $85 AICS mags?

Please advice. Thanks!

Re: Need advice: CDI bottom and mags

1) I think the CDI metal is more rigid than the stock. You only take a little bit off the stock, so I don't think it affects stock rigidity much at all.

2) If you're handy with a dremel (i.e. RedJacket qualified), you can do it yourself.

Re: Need advice: CDI bottom and mags

Can't speak for Remingtons, but the CDI DBM was a great replacement for my two Savages with internal box magazines.

As for magazines...Alpha Mags (when you can find them), Accurate-Mag, or genuine AI mags from any number of sources all work fine.
