Need advice.... JP LPR-07 308 vs 6.5

Hi there

I have a great opportunity to purchase a lightly used JP LPR-07 side charger in 308. Was saving up for a 6.5 creed version to match my bolt guns - this would be my only 308. I don’t reload at this time so that’s not a factor. I started with 6.5 for long distance and have several bolts in 6.5 that I shoot regularly. I’ve been itching for a semi 6.5 but have to ask - am I giving up much now going with a semi 308. It clearly a want vs need situation - with my saving rate a 6.5 is 6 months out, otherwise this 308 is priced to purchase now. Thanks in advance

You could get the .308 and in 6 months when you have the cash swap out the barrel to lets say a 1-8 22in heavy 6.5 cm barrel. I have a SIG 716 I shoot 5-6 times a year and its only a 16 in barrel but it doe reach out to 750 yards with good accuracy. Plus .308 is cheaper to shoot,

I was thinking about that very option, swapping the barrels at a later date. Is that a simple procedure on the JPs? I understand this is indeed a somewhat loaded or highly opinionated situation here but I’ve learned a lot on the site and thought I’d ask the experts

if your end goal is another 6.5, then just wait 6 months. a bit of $$ down the drain to change calibers. 308 is a good round with tons of ammo choices and availability and good pricing. just have to be a little better at reading wind vs the 6.5.

With 6.5 vs 308 you're going to have a different port length and different gas tube. So, while it's pretty straightforward pulling the handguard, you will need a different gas tube as well which is a tiny part but a bit more time to swap. Then you end up with 308 parts just sitting there waiting to be money-watered into a new rifle all over again.

Realistically I'd say wait and get what you want. JP's can be built into your dream gun ideal for exactly what you want it to do. You can also get off the shelf standard models with a bit of a reduction in pricing.

Then there's the obvious answer of "Both" or "Buy the 308 and get a 6.5 upper" but the latter is not as much fun as "Both."

might not hurt to have something that runs a very common caliber for SHTF or EOLAWKI, if that is part of reality for you.
it is nice only have to keep stocks of one caliber though.

I went with the 6.5, was in Mile High and they told me that it was $900 to change the barrel on my LRP-007 once it was shot out. How much savings are you really getting if you know going in your gonna drop another 900 on it when you switch it? I love mine in 6.5, and I'm sure I'd love mine in 308. IF you get it leave it a 308 and love it for what it is.


That said I ordered mine in 6.5...…….just sayin

That said, I bought a friggin .260 remington JP LRP07. For $1600. And then got a 6.5 proof research barrel for it new in wrap for $500. $2100 later I had a proof barreled LrP-07, which I consider the finest gun of its type I have ever shot.

I have a LRP-07 and it would most likeley replace the m-21 very well if you use optics on the gun. If you would be using the gun with irons, I would stay with the M 1A patterned rifle. As far as load preferences, my JP's all seems to shoot any of he quality bullets equally well.

And add a 6.5CM JP upper later.

Cheapest way ... nah.

But.... a .308 AR sure hits the spot.... ( Lol, pun intended )

I’d wait and get the 6.5. .308 is fine but you know damn well you’re gonna be shooting that but wishing you would’ve got the Creed.

Gotta have impulse control. Since it’ll take you 6 months to save for it, place your order in 3 months (50%) down. That way, by the time you’ve got your funds ready, your rifle would be ready at about that same time.

The LRP is the most bitchin AR I’ve ever shot and I’ve shot one or two.

That JP/VTAC barrel nut is a HUGE pain in the dick for those that haven't tagged one out before. MASSIVE ass pain. They basically turn it into a monolithic upper via red Loctite. It's rock solid, but will require the right tools (and a lot of heat) to get apart, and a day or two to get back together.
