Need advice on this 6.5 Grendel

I recently finished assembling this 6.5 Grendel build:

specs are:
Sabre Defence 20" stainless fluted match barrel
DD 14" lite rail
NF 3.5-15x50mm scope
Rainier Arms upper receiver
Young's National Match Chrome bolt carrier
Armalite Lower
Geissele ssa-e trigger
BCM gunfighter charging handle
Ergo grip
UBR stock
springco action spring
PWS compensator

Overall I'm pleased, but don't care for the miles of unneeded handguard rail. The rail came with the upper and I'm wanting advice for a tubular type handguard. Happy New Year and thanks in advance..

ive had my eye on this one from troy http://troyind.com/battlerails/trx-battlerails

it has differnt sized picatinny rail sections that can be placed where you need then.

I was thinking of using the troy on a .22 grendel i have.

Though I do like the DD Lite Rail as rails go.

This one from Alexander Arms is very nice, and has pilot holes in the event you'd like some rail for Atlas bipod (or anything you want really). I would definitely order this were I doing it again.

Sabre told me they do not lap their barrels so how do they consider or call it a match grade barrel?

Go with the VTAC or maybe even try the rifle length Magpul MOE handguard, you cant beat it for the price.

Also if your reloading try the 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips and BL-C(2) and the 123gr. Lapua Scenars and Win748.

I also have a 6.5 Grendel build with a sabre bbl and it shoots sub-moa with these reloads above.

I responded to a very similar thread recently about smooth tube forends. I have a number or rifles with tube forends. One of the Yankee Hill tubes has unthreaded pilot holes that I can tap with whatever thread size I wish. The tube that has rails all around it snags on things, or if I put the rail covers on all the rails, the diameter is larger than I prefer.

I think the YMH tube that allows me to place rail sections where ever I wish is the best solution. I won't be buying another tube that has non removeable rails at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o' clock. I'll get the tubes that allow me to choose where the rails go. The only exception to that would be one rail along the 12 o'clock position.

When Sabre told you they didn't lap their barrels, did they tell you why they call them match barrels, or was the topic dropped then?

I suppose Sabre could call an unlapped barrel anything they want. Just because a barrel is, or is not lapped doesn't make it shoot well or poorly. I'm just guessing that calling a barrel match grade helps them sell better than calling them unlapped, mediocre, barrels.

What I'm working toward is that I think this question would best be answered by Sabre. Anyone else (myself included) would just be guessing at why Sabre considers an unlapped barrel a match grade barrel.

I'd go with the JP/Vtac. We have a couple of them and they are nice and solid and offer lots of places you can attach accessories if you need to.

Lapping is done so the bore is uniform within .0003 from end to end, checked with an airgauge. Look in a barrel that is not lapped with a borescope, it looks like rumble strips on the side of the hwy. Yeah I know calling them "match grade" helps sell them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would require installation of the delta ring? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having an accurate rifle due to the fact the barrel would no longer be free-floated?

I've not had much opportunity to shoot this with any amount of range; the local range has been closed. I was able to shoot 10 rounds of factory amax today at 50 yards, still zeroing this in. the conditions were less than optimal, 12 degrees using a bipod and me lying in frozen deeply rutted terrain. The target itself was practically unsupported (target leaning against an empty box that was lying there. Those are 1" squares on the target.

as far as the handguard goes, I'm really liking both the vtac and the AA handguard.

It appears I erred when I called it a "match barrel"
I bought this upper:
UPPER

When I read/heard " 20" stainless, fluted barrel" I thought "match grade" and mispoke. However, I don't have any concerns with the quality or potential accuracy of this barrel.

You have any chrono data on those factory 123gr Amax's out of your 20"?

I'm building a Grendel around a 18" Satern barrel and bought the MI forearm in mid length (you probably want the extended carbine or rifle for a 20"):

Nice looking grendel. I love mine. I have a PRI forend on mine and like it. The JP looks great too, just less expensive. I'm just the opposite of you: I wish I had the rails on mine but just my opinion.
