I plan on ordering a Savage prefit from Northland and I would like to stay with Criterion. I plan on using the Berger AR Tactical 130 bullet. I reload but I hate doing it so I don't want to mess with seating depth or chasing the lands etc. The fewer steps the better for me.

My question is does freebore length matter for barrel life? The Criterion FB is a .167 I believe, which is pretty long for a 130 class bullet. If I go that route will I be sacrificing any barrel life by starting out with a longer freebore compared to say a .130 FB?

This may be a dumb question but I can't wrap my head around it.

    Thanks

For barrel life? No. Its a separate variable. Barrels can have throats a mile long and still shoot well.

It could however impede your ability to get a certain bullet to shoot in a certain combination though if the lands erode enough to not allow you to seat out far enough for your tune window. AKA it can move enough to make your load untuned without being all the way worn out.

Now for the specifics on the x47 throat dimensions Ill have to defer to others. Id think a 130 would be workable in either, if you wanted 140s go longer, if 120s go shorter.

115-135 is perfect for 130AR/vld or 123 scenars/hornady..141 (GAP 6.5x47 reamer) is between.just barely enough for 140hyb but ok for 140 vld.if you wanna do 140hyb 157-166 is great..136/139 scenars or hornady 140s you going to need at least 175-188

We make a 6.5x47L with a 145 freebore which we have found to be perfect with the 123-135 class bullets. It is still very good for most of the sleeker 140's but the 130 AR Comps hammer in it.

The 6.5x47L has several offerings, when you check out put a comment in the order notes for the 145 Freebore, aka the "Lopina" reamer. It is named after the fellow who requested that specific reamer and since it worked so well we named our shop reamer after him.

I run 130 ARs out of my DTA factory x47 and it must have at least .180 freebore. They shoot great. Can't get a 130 Jlk anywhere near lands and still have enough bearing surface in the case.

I'm glad you posted, I forgot you guys did savage barrels. Do you offer a barrel nut/wrench for the savage like you do for the tikka? Does it come with the barrel or what is the cost? I would also need a recoil lug if you could tell me its cost as well. I didn't see these on the site.

    Thanks

About a .135FB works fine for 140's too. I know you want to run factory 130 ammo and but no matter the chamber specs, no one can tell you bases solely on FB if the ammo will shoot or not in your rifle. It will be hit or miss if the ammo works well in each specific rifle.

Shilen replied to an email I sent them asking what freebore length they used if you didn't send in dummy rounds. The person responded with "I think the L stands for Lapua."

They also sent a drawing of the wrong chamber.

I'm going with PVA and Josh's recommendation for the reamer.

    Thanks for everyone's help.
