Need help deciding on this 40x Please

Came across this 40x for sale and I'm hoping for some opinions from someone who know more about them. Heres some pics

And heres the description:
"Remington Model 40-X .22LR Heavy target barrel and vintage J.Unertl (1.5 inch) target 20X. NO it is NOT USMC marked. Issues with trigger (can be replaced) but works and is adjustable. Missing the butt plate/pad (can be replaced) and the front of the stock has been cut. $950"

I think it would make a great project, 40x are somewhat more rare and valuable up here in Canada that in the US. The price seems right to me but I could be wrong.

Does anyone know what the stock is and maybe how much has been cut off?

My thoughts are to either look for a different stock, maybe a old, period correct 40x stock or try to fix this one and refinish it. Would have to do something with the butt pad/plate aswell.

$950? On a good day, the Unertl 20X would bring close to that amount...if it were me, I'd swoop on it.....xray9

That's what I was thinking, thanks xray9. How hard is it to find a period correct stock for these, do they come up for sale much?

I would jump on that in a heart beat! Stock looks to be freeland. Butt plate parts are not hard to get of Ebay. I would consider that Unertl scope A STEAL @ $700...that means you will have $250 into the rest. BUY IT! Or tell me where it is located so I can buy it!

I thought the scope was worth something, I sent a message to the guy last night saying I would take it so let's just hope I was the first one.

Looks like it has a Canjar light pull trigger. They will fetch several hundred on fleabay if you don't like it. Factory stocks are on fleabay all the time. The one on it looks like the very first one Ronnie Milsap modified!!!! As stated the Unertl is worth near the asking price. SN makes it a later made one. I wouldn't hesitate long on that deal. Scope and action alone make it a steal, if it shoots its all gravy.

I bought one off another site about 3 months ago. Has the same adjustable butt plate (mine is complete) and no sights at all and I paid $950. Shoots great by the way.... That is a good deal

The rifle is on it's way to me, should have it by mid next week, I will post better pics when I get it, thanks for the help!
