im sure there are a lot of predator hunters here ,, any advice would be greatly appreciated.... just started coyote hunting and pulled a nice shot on one this afternoon, bout 350 yards with .308.. anyway, he cut a flip and then layed motionless..after i shot i waited about 5min and then stared twards him. when i got within 20 yrds of him he took off like a bat out of hell ! like nothing ever happened !
im assuming he is double lunged,,, how long should i wait before trying to track him ? nhow far can they go like that ?
thanks in advance....

I think You might be "assuming" a little much. My experience a double lung shot coyote dies real fast. Bet when "if" you find it shot was low or too far back. When you find it let us know. krw

Was there blood on the ground? Assuming that you didn't just hit him in a leg I would keep an eye out (depending on your terrain) for either a dead one tomorrow or some well fed coyote cousins wandering around soon

Dunno about waiting, usually after the shot its pack up and go get him as their deaths are usually quite instant or if you miss they dont stick around long enough to take another poke at them.

Re: NEED HELP ! double lunged coyote....... ????

I'm speculating a high hit over the spine, below the top of the back. Stunned him.

Did you hold any daylight between the top of the back and the crosshairs?

I used to shoot over them when I did that. I learned to hold on fur for long shots.

Got any dogs to do a follow up? If he's down they'll find him

I've shots lots of coyotes with a .308 and Speer 130 HP. Never had one run off IF I hit it in the body.

yeah.. benn looking around for a while now and no blood.. so weird, the damn thing was down, legs up in the air.. im leaning more twards high and stunned myself.. damn shame, would have been my first yote.. it was pretty big and well colored.. theres lots more though
thanks guys

I smoked one at 375 with a 223 running 50gr V Max bullets. Paws in the air for 15sec and then he popped up and trotted off another 800yrds or better. NEXT! That happened to be the first time that has happened in 3 yrs. Everything else was chest dumps and cavity jello.
Pour shot on my part and further than I run with that rig typically. Shot placement is obviously off as above.

I have witnessed yotes run off with guts dragging as well as other parts.

Re: NEED HELP ! double lunged coyote....... ????

If you double lunged anything with a 168 bthp then it would be dead, pronto. You either grazed his head and knocked him out, grazed his spine and stunned him, or you hit him in guts.

Re: NEED HELP ! double lunged coyote....... ????

I feel for ya!

I have shot a hand full of yotes that I swore I hit dead-on, just disappear. Coyotes are wierd animals...I hate the fuckers.

But they sure are fun to hunt. Never boring.

Best of luck!

SMK? I used that bullet in my M40A1 for awhile before giving up on it. Broadside coyotes hit behind the shoulder would almost always run if it missed the shoulder. Some of them I never found. When I started using 155 scenars that came to an end.

definitely! my experiences with lung shots is that they drop where they stand... no questions asked.

Re: NEED HELP ! double lunged coyote....... ????

PGS is right on the SMK. I shot a couple yotes with them, all the SMK did from my experience was punch holes in them. Also shot jack rabbits and same thing. hit the rabbit, it would roll over get up and run off a ways.

Re: NEED HELP ! double lunged coyote....... ????

non-related 'yote killing story...

Wasn't pelt worthy to start with but my hunting buddy spotted one trailing a doe that walked under his stand. 50yd head shot from 25 feet up with a 450 marlin, nailed his head to the bottom of the crater. That had to be like getting hit with a thunderbolt.

When the New England whalers tired out their prey and "reeled them in," they finished them off by piercing both lungs with a skinny little lance.

Nothing with two punctured lungs lives.

Very true, but a coyote can cover a good bit of ground after a shot as described, and make it into heavy cover sometimes.
