The Craigslist God smiled on me today and I just bought an 11 drawer Kennedy tool chest for a song. It's missing the drawer cover and had no keys but I don't need either, I was just looking for a chest suitable for my punches and other small tools. The box obviously belonged to a machinist at some point and there were some tools left in the box. I have no idea what they are or if they would be worth anything so I'm hoping someone knowledgeable may be able to shed some light.

Re: Need help from machinists

That's a classic machinists tool box

First pic is some HSS lathe tools with carbide tips brazed on and TiN coated and HSS endmills pretty much all junk or $5 for the lot.

Second pic is some carbide lathe tools and blanks along with some broken center drills which is all nearly worthless.

3rd is taps. "GH" - gun hole but that doesn't actually mean it has anything to do with guns, it's just the type of tap, might get $2 for them. The top one in the white box might be an endmill but can't tell from the label.

Great toolbox! I had one at my bench when I worked as a machinist. Generally they're pretty spendy.

Re: Need help from machinists

Thanks HB. I didn't expect them to be worth too much but wanted to check before I tossed anything out.

I saw the tool chest on CL and knew the Kennedy name to be at least decent quality. I called about it and found out which model it was then checked on Google and saw what they cost new. I don't think I did too bad for $85.

Looks like a good catch! Not for the tools, but for the box. CL can have some good deals, but you have to have patience and know what you're looking at. Last spring I picked up an air compressor that needed some TLC and a few parts. So after I picked up the compressor and put on a new electric switch, check valve, safety pop-off, and all new tubing, I had a 220V 2HP 2 stage compressor with 80 gallon can. I have about $320 into the whole thing.

NP. I wouldn't toss them out though. Somebody who has the ability to resharpen the mills with a tool grinder would probably take them off your hands, I'd say $10 for the lot + shipping. The bigger ones still have a lot of life in them but the trick is having the ability to resharpen the lips of the HSS and that requires petty specialized grinding units. Most endmills under 1/2" are disposable as it would cost more to resharpen it than just buying a new one and the gold colored ones (TiN) are trash because even if you could resharpen them you wouldn't be able to recoat them. the lathe tools are going to be good for a lifetime but they're cheap. I bet you can get a replacement drawer from the company.

Re: Need help from machinists

I appreciate the help guys. Whatever is in there that I have no use for will end up in AJ's capable hands. Hopefully there will be something in there worth a few bucks that will go toward my next project.
