Hello all,

First some background. I am wanting to move away from bolt action toward semi-automatic. 99.9% of my shooting is within 800 meters. Most of my shooting is 200-300 meters and I train on shooting 110 mm clay pigeons which closely simulate the vital zone of a man. After I sell my 300WM APA, I intend to buy a Les Baer 308 semi auto. The 1/2 MOA accuracy that Les Baer guarantees is more than enough to be engaging man sized targets out to 800 meters. The 20 round magazine capacity, rapid target engagement, and not having to remove the firing hand to cycle the bolt every time is why I am switching to semi-automatic. I feel that bolt action rifles should be used at distances greater than 800 meters because of the larger caliber options (338 Lapua Magnum) that have superior ballistics. Bolt actions also have slightly better accuracy than semi-autos and this makes a difference at the longer distances. Lastly, at the long distances there is such a long flight time that you can cycle the bolt and watch the splash with a bolt action. Again, most of my shots are within 800 meters and I find a semi-auto to be the intelligent choice.

I have a S&B PMII 4-16x50mm w/ P4F on my APA 300WM and find that most of the time I have it set at about 10x anyway. The only time I have it on 16x is for mil-dot range estimation. I rarely use the illuminated feature of the scope. When I did, the CR2032 batteries always died quickly.

I am considering the fixed S&B PMII 10x42mm. It is simple, robust, reliable, light weight, $1500 cheaper, is non-illuminated and the 10x is what I use most often. I will definitely get it in mil/mil with 0.1mil clicks. The cons are it has 13 mils of elevation (Les Baer 308 is a flat top with no MOA slant), parallax is non-adjustable and set at 300 meters, it is a fixed 10x so engaging movers at close range would suck. The P3 reticle has no 0.5mil marks and makes mil-dot range estimation more difficult.

Other options I have looked at are the S&B PMII 4-16x42mm and 3-12x50mm. Again, I strongly prefer a fixed power scope because of its simplicity.

Give me your input gentleman.

BTW, I am a former Marine 0311 and was a PIG in 3/2 SSP.

If you want to go fixed 10x you can always put a red dot or something on the right side. That's what I do when I have my 12x on my LR308.

But if I had the dough to toss I'd like the USO 1.8-10x, or maybe their 1-8x. I just settled into a SS HD 1-6x24 MRAD FFP that has a retical ideal for cqb @ 1x and when cranked up you get a usable mil scale. I don't think I'll be going any 800 meters anytime soon, but when I do, I prefer my SS 12x42. But I understand you want simplicity.

USO MR10 1.8-10x. The low power of 1.8x is great for up close and moving targets. They are FFP, so you can range at any magnification. Good choice of reticles. I have one on my coyote rifle and I think it is the BEST all-around scope USO offers.
