<span style="font-weight: bold">Squad Designated Marksmanship (SDM) Course</span>
The Squad Designated Marksmanship Course is a 10-day training program held at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The focus of the course is on the Soldier’s need to rapidly engage targets at 300-600 meters with accurate fires under day and night conditions. The program begins with the fundamentals of marksmanship and progresses to more rapid and accurate engagements employing the individual rifle. The following are samples of the skills trained:
• Correctly zeroing iron sights at 25 meters
• Fundamentals as they apply (sight picture, sight alignment, trigger control)
• Theory and method of grouping and of zeroing
• Understanding external ballistics at extended ranges
• Rapid and effective manipulation of individual weapon system for reloads and positioning
• Supported and unsupported position shooting while wearing full combat gear
• Single and multiple target engagements
• Effective employment of barricades
• Shooters will learn how to analyze/self critique their performance in order to identify areas for self improvement
• Learn how to compensate for environmental conditions
This is conducted at Ft. Benning, Georgia on our 600 meter Known Distance Range and local machine gun ranges. This allows the Warfighter to focus on the fundamentals of shooting while receiving feedback for shots fired and culminates with the practical application of all the principles taught in an environment with unknown distance, limited exposure and only natural environmental feedback indicators.

2.) Sending units will fund all TDY associated (Travel & Per Diem) with sending their soldiers to Ft. Benning Ga. The USAMU will not be responsible for any incurred expenses
Weapons:
1.) Soldiers that are attending will require their assigned weapon system with optics and back up iron sights. The USAMU has limited weapon systems that it can provide. These weapons will be requested during initial enrollment through the USAMU Training Group and are intended for students traveling from OCONUS locations or students who are assigned to units without weapons (i.e. Captains Career Course etc.). Students attending the course with a borrowed weapon form the USAMU will be on a first come first serve basis. Soldiers may attend the course with the following weapon systems: M16A4 or M4 with day optic, Enhanced Battle Rifle (EBR) or 110 SASS with appropriate scope. If the student is going to attend the SDM course with an EBR or 110 SASS we need to be aware as soon as possible in order to allocate the appropriate ammunition.
2.) Soldiers will find the use of a magnified optic critical to course completion. The preferred optic is the ACOG or ELCAN. Soldiers that bring M68, EOTECH, and other “dot” optics will expect a training hurdle in achieving course standards as these optics are difficult to accurately utilize beyond 400 yards with any consistency. Magnification adapters can reduce this limitation and allow the student to tackle the course objectives however they should not expect to match the performance of their magnified peers.

1.) Sign in will be at 07:00 in the 3rd floor conference room of the USAMU HQs.
2.) Students will sign in and receive their course packet the first day of the course.
3.) Soldiers attending will need to bring daily lunches. Training will not be stopped for lunch times. Lunch will eaten in the pits.
4.) Each students unit is responsible for lodging, per diem and personal transportation. Transportation to and from the range with government weapons will be provided by USAMU during the course. On post billeting office (Olsen Hall) phone number is 706 689 0067 ext 4701.
