I need some help guys. I started with a Rock River mid length a4 flattop. It's a 16" hbar. I've had fun with it, and have put less than 300 rounds through it.

What I would like to do is build a precision/varmint type ar.

Going to go with a free float tube. Suggestions welcome. Not looking to get one with rails, b/c I'm not going the tactical route. Also going to go with a standard 12" length.

Need suggestions on high mount rings for it. I've already got 2 scopes I could put on it: Leupold VXII 2x7 or a Leupold VXIII 1.75x6.

I'm going to replace the original receiver with a slick side - I like the clean lines better. So far the options that I have found are: DPMS Lo Pro flattop receiver, Sun Devil Receiver, or TKS engineering. The last 2 are billet receivers - but I think any would serve my purposes.

Going to lose the 16" HBAR in favor of a bull barrel. From what I have been reading I think I would like the .223 Wylde chamber in a stainless barrel that is either 16" or 18" in length. The problem is what barrel to get and where can I get it? Need help here.

Probably going to go with the magpul ctr stock in dark earth if I can ever find one and a falcon industries grip.

I've already got a lo profile gas block to go under my tube.

Once I finish accumulating all parts I'm going to do a light brown duracoat to various parts.

Just wanted to see if I could benefit from your experience before I go dropping more money.
thanks

Re: Need help with precision AR build

I think you would be very happy with a DPMS LoPro upper and a Wilson 18" bull barrel, finished off with a standard 2pc free float tube from any of the manufacturers (they all seem to be fairly similar). Hogue makes one with a rubber coating, and I have owned a few of them.

As far as the barrel, you can order them from White Oak Armament for around $275 or so. You can get one in 1/7 or 1/12 twist for the 18" version, and 1/8 for the 20" variety. Problem is, wait time right now is around 18-22 weeks for WOA. You may be able to order elsewhere, but I think the wait times are pretty much the same all over. Now, if you are going with a full bull barrel, then you will need a new gas block. Your heavy barrel is likely .750" at the gas block, whereas a full bull will be around .920". WOA can supply the barrel with a fitted block, so that is no issue. Personally, if it were me, I would go ahead and have them send a gas block and a fitted bolt with the barrel.

On mounts, there are several that will fit your requirements. I personally like the LaRue SPR 1.5, as it allows you to mount the scope farther forward (and still stay on the upper). I have a set of Warne extra high quick detach rings I also use, except I have to mount one on the upper and the other on the freet float railed forend to get the spacing I need for my scope. Of course, the LaRue costs around $200 for the mount, while the Warnes are $65. You can also look at the 1pc mount offered by Rock River, as they work pretty well alsoand are very solid.

Where are you located in GA? Send me a PM, and I'll show you some of my setups and can help you build one if necessary.

+1 on WOA, John Hollinger can help with the bbl.
Burris makes a new AR scope mt. that is under $100.
I used the 20" SDM bbl from WOA and it shoots 1/2"@100 with 60grn V-Max.

Re: Need help with precision AR build

Since you have most of the parts already, I would seriously recommend that you build a complete upper rather than work on the existing upper. This way you can have one rifle both ways by pushing two pins.

Now, I see by the length of the barrel that you are looking at and the magnification of the available scopes that you are building a short range precision rifle. Because of this, you will not be using the heavier/longer bullets so there really is no need for a Wylde chamber. In fact for a precision rig, I would recommend a nice tight .223 Remington Match chamber and probably use the excellent 52grSMK or the V-Max or ssome such bullet.

Something similar to what you have RRA 16" heavy middy

Added a JP Enterprises VTAC tube and a lopro gas block, rifle will shoot sub MOA

I have tried bull barrel's but the HBAR's shoot just as well, just need to float em.

Re: Need help with precision AR build

Will a 16" 1 in 8 twist barrel not stabilize the 65 grains and up selection?

My brother-in-law just bought a brand new dpms lo pro classic rifle yesterday and it has a 16" bull barrel. It balanced very well, and I like it. I have never handled an 18" bull barrel, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

The reason why I don't want to have 2 complete uppers is money. I need to sell un-needed parts in order to pay for the new build. I'm an elementary school PE teacher, my wife is a stay-at-home mom and I have 3 children under the age of 7. Now you all know I don't have any money! :O)

Re: Need help with precision AR build

the JP tube is your best option tube and lopro gas block was something like 220 or so, the rail was another 60ish, 1/8 will stabalize just about anything you want to feed it

Re: Need help with precision AR build

1/8 will stabilize up to 77gr bullets with no problems. I have two 1/9 twist rifles, and they both shoot 75gr BTHP's very well.

You shouldn't have any problems selling the extra parts, as they are in big demand right now. In fact, you could probably post the upper and just about trade it for what you are looking for.
