I have decided to order a wolf recoil spring for my usp, the factory spring is 14lb, I remember when i first got the hand gun i could barley rack the slide, now i can rack it with 2 fingers and it just seems weak.

not sure if i should go with another 14lb spring or get a 16 or 20 lb spring, if i go to an extra power spring like the 16 or 20 what will i gain ? less recoil or less wear or ? I have never done this before and to be honest i am nervy about going with extra power springs with out first asking, if any one could explain it to me that would be cool

Re: Need help with wolff springs

go with the factory rated spring unless you plan on using +p loads if at first it wont cycle properly lock the slide back and leave it for a few days but chances are that when you first got the gun it wasnt oiled all that well so make sure to always use plenty of oil

LEAVE IT WELL ENOUGH ALONE!!!

The factory recoil springs are rated for a service life of 20k+ rounds under normal use. Unless you have somewhere close to that number through yours, it isn't likely to need replaced.

The only other reason for replacement would be premature failure of the spring. Ease of pulling the slide back comes with break-in of the pistol and will get easier over time so that isn't a good test of whether to replace your recoil spring. The easiest way to tell if the pistol needs a new recoil spring is if it is ejecting brass into the next town over instead of dropping them within 5-6' or less of your shooting position. Also, if you are seeing any unusual signs of wear/tear on your frame/rails. Finally, if the pistol is having difficulty cycling (that isn't fixed with proper lubrication) such as ejecting a spent case and failing to fully chamber the next round (i.e. - spring is too weak to get the job done), then the spring may need replacing.

In any event, unless your pistol is experiencing those issues, LEAVE IT ALONE. If it is, then I would ONLY replace the factory spring with another spring of the same rating (14lbs). There is no need to move to a heavier recoil spring unless you are shooting +P or other heavy loads through it all the time or you are having cycling issues when running a suppressor. The Wolff springs are the way to go for HK spring replacement as they cost roughly half what the HK Factory springs run!
