Need opinions on a bolt carrier group.

I'm doing an AR build with a Colt 6920 upper. I've done some research on the BCGs and my head is spinning.

Besides, the obvious of getting a 6920 BCG, what are some other good options for a good, personnal M4? This won't be a fully-automatic rifle. I'm looking at the price of the Colts and it seems like I'm paying a lot more for the name...I know, you get what you pay for and I'm sure I won't be disapointed in the Colt, but again, do I have other options just as good like LMT, etc? Thanks!

Re: Need opinions on a bolt carrier group.

young NM BCG's are a good product and on the top end Fail zero. To be honest with ya any quality BCG will run fine, but if ya want it chromed or coated it's going to run ya a little more. LMT would be a great choice as well.

Re: Need opinions on a bolt carrier group.

So what's the deal with light weight BCGs versus heavy, M16 BCGs? How do they effect my performance on a standard M4? From what I'm getting, the lighter I go, the more issues I may have whereas, just getting a heavy one removes any doubt. Am I wrong?

Captnmo,

I have the same concern on my build. I am thinking that I don't want a lighter weight one. I have been leaning toward the ti nitride coated one from DPMS or just a chrome one. My SP1 has never failed with a plain black colt carrier so I will decide tomorrow when I pull the trigger on the order.

Re: Need opinions on a bolt carrier group.

a heavier BCG will increase dwell time and overall increase accuracy, so they say ( the movement of parts is limited til the projectile leaves the barrel)... I had a Young BCG (1/2 oz heavier than factory specs) and it functioned fine. The headspacing was spot on and cleaned up fast. just my 2 cents

Re: Need opinions on a bolt carrier group.

As a noob to AR's if I replace my BCG, should the rifle go to a gunsmith to check headspacing, or should they all be close enough to spec to shoot safely then tinker from there?

I also thought the same thing when i first started building AR's.

The thing I did was put the Lighter (Semi) carriers in my Carbines w/ Carbine Gas, the Heavy (M16-Auto) carrier in my Rifle length gas builds.

I also put the heavier Auto carrier in my 6.5 Grendel build w/ mid-gas. Im thinking the bigger the cal. it would be better to have the Auto (heavy) carrier.

Im sure it wouldnt hurt if you put a Auto carrier in a carbine but the way I have done it, I have NEVER had any types of problems.

I also have never checked headspacing in any of my AR's but most of my barrels came with a matching bolt. I dont think there is any need to check it. I reload all my ammo and they all shoot sub-moa.

Re: Need opinions on a bolt carrier group.

Longrange,
What brand of BCGs did you put in? I'm looking at several, LMT, Larue, Noveske...all are good, so I don't know how much of a difference. My upper is a Colt 6920 so I don't know how important it is to put a Colt BCG or not.

Also, is there any merit to having them chrome-lined or phosphate treated? I'm sure it all depends on the kind of use, and honestly, it's a fun-gun so my life doesn't depend on it....but you know the thinking, it's better to have it than not.

I have run all three of JP's bolt carrier's. The aluminum, lightweight stainless, and tactical stainless. As always, JP's build quality is absolutely flawless and reliability has been exceptional. I run the aluminum in a race gun and it has to be kept clean (wiped off every 4-500rds) and run wet but it has run great for me. As far as the bolts, you can get a basic mils spec bolt or a JP Enhanced bolt see them at http://jprifles.com/1.4.7_bc.php

Re: Need opinions on a bolt carrier group.

Thanks for the great info. I read through the other thread and got a lot out of it. I purchased a BCM heavy BCG and it's in the mail. I plan on putting it in my M4 build with a 1/7 twist. So it sounds like the heavier BCG will be good compliment for the heavier-load barrel.

Larue does not manufacture bolt carrier groups and will not identify their source. They are not mil-spec, either, or if they are, this cannot be verified.

I have an LMT bolt in my gun; that's what I'd recommend. BCM makes a good bolt carrier, too. Both have mil-spec carriers available.
