Hello everyone.

I need some start loads for: Rem 700 PSS 26"

168 and 175gr SMK
LC case
CCI 34 primer
IMR-4895 or RL-15

I have extensive experience loading for service rifles; M1A, M1 Garand, AR-15, etc., but I am a bit confused by the fact that many use more powder for loads in their bolt action rifles.

Any explanation why these rifles require additional velocity would be welcome. I assume it is for long-range accuracy and the absence of an op-rod allows hotter loads. What is the velocity target for these rounds??? 2600 FPS????

Thanks. I am totally new to reloading for bolt action stuff!!!!!

Check out the Reloading Depot at the top of reloading page. That should get you a good start. Alot of guys especially with the long throated Remington actions use more powder to gain velocity and less drop at longer ranges. Most of us that own Remington notice little pressure signs with compressed loads. But those hotter loads can also play wear and tear on your throat. Becareful and work up slowly. Welcome to the Hide.

I tried the Reloading Depot, but few folks use LC or FC NATO brass which is much heavier than Federal or Win brass. I have 1k's of once-fired military cases, so I need loads using military brass.

Any help would be appreciated????

Reloading manuals are all over the place and way to conservative on the low end. On top of that they all use the thin brass for load development. I have many of the manuals and find better data from experienced reloaders. I know for a fact I do not need to start at 38.0 gr of IMR-4895....and am not going to use compressed loads as max velocity never equals max accuracy. The sweet spot is in the middle somewhere and I do not have all that much free time to reload. Just need a starting point.

Thanks for the welcome.

I personally dont use mil brass but from what I understand mil brass has alot less volume than say lapua or standard brass. You may be able to get 40grs in a Lapua and 38gr in Milspec per say. Keep in mind that the pressure will also go up do to the less volume. When working with milspec I would probably suggest you go with a good manual for these reasons alone (starting low and working up). Last thing you want is for your gun to go boom in your face. Im sure someone will chime in using milspec to give you some sort of starting point.

most of us use 44-45 grains of varget.but for you I would start at 42-43 grains.this should be a good starting place with mil.brass.even 40-43 grains of 4064 should be a good starting point.just remember to start at a low end charge and work up.for me I can back off 2-3 grains in my 223 when I use mil.brass and get the same results.you can eeven use he -10% method to gve you a starting point.but het its JMHO
