Looking for an 22 scope for my dad 10/22 target model. I use leupold efr on my rings but they are kinda pricey for him to shot tree rats from office window. Needs to focus down to 10-15 yards. Would like at least 14x power. Any suggestions
If he is shooting at 10-15 yards, try iron sights. If shooting longer range 6x should be plenty as the RF is only effective on head shots to 100 or so. Beyond that energy is so low and winds so fickel that more optic power does not equal more range.
I know this is against my own rules, but I use a WallyWorld Tasco 3 X 9 X 50 for $39. It works very well for hunting squirrel. It does not have an adjustable objective witch I found to be a good thing. Squirrels never stay still long enough for me to set the focus on the adjustable objective.
Loan him one of your rigs. The Leupold EFR is unequalled in quality and clarity in that particular kind of scope.
When my father was alive he had the best I could buy him to hunt with, even if I had to use a 4x World Class(and did).
The way I figured it, I could see far better than he could.
I like the 42mm Tasco Varmint/Target MilDot. Available in 2.5-10 and 6-24 magnifications, they have covered Target knobs with 1/4MOA clicks and focus down to 15yd. Sells for under $100 from most dealers.
I have used them on 10/22's, Sav MKII's, a .30-'06 M70 Hunter, and even my Savage Custom .260 1000yd F Class Open rifle. They just work and keep on working.
I went through a Barska and Tasco before buying a Nikon.22 BDC. There is on comparision. While it may not be a Leupold (haven't compared them), it is a great scope for the money.
I like the Nikon scopes for rifles such as that. I go by the principle of a scope should cost at least half as much as the rifle you are putting it on. Works for me anyway.
It seems that a 14X scope is a bit much for the Ruger 10/22 though, but maybe that is what your dad wants. I would go with a nice 3-9X Nikon myself. JMHO.
