Night Vision Need some help getting into the NV world

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of knowledge here. I am wanting to get in to some night hunting but have no clue what so ever about nv. I do know my shots will be within 200yds and I would like to use a device that will work with my day scopes, and also be fairly affordable being that it will be my first time using nv and im not sure how I will like it/or how much I will use it. Thanks in advance

A lot has to do with the budget you may have to work with that will narrow down the choices. Quality Clip-on's can be expensive as well that go out in front of your day scope.

There are also a host of quality dedicated NV scopes out there as well.

You need to hold off on any NV gear if you budget is less than 1K IMHO there is not anything worth purchasing for that price.

The best NV scope you can get for the least amount of money is the L-3 M845 Mk$ 2.5X which would be great for hogs and/or coyotes at intermediate ranges with an IR Illuminator like the TNVC Torch Pro. This is what I would recommend for a newbie NV person interested in night hunting.

Other than that, the absolute best all around NV purchase is an ITT Pinnacle PVS-14 Night Enforcer which costs close to double what the M845 NV scope costs.

My first NV purchase that I saved up for was an ITT PVS-14 Night Enforcer, it was such a massive game changer for me I immediately started saving up for another one but they are just that damn useful and versatile. I never leave home to go night hunting without one and I have allot of NV and Thermal gear.

Clip-On NV instruments that work with day scope are expensive as are Clip-On Thermal instruments. It would be better to setup up a rifle specifically for NV use if you are on a budget, than to try to set it up for day and night use. You can use a PVS-14 as a clip-on to a scope or red dot sight, but like I said it is much more expensive than what you are considering to pay. Although anyone seriously interested in NV hunting is going to get a PVS-14....

Save up to get the M-845, is is the best introductory night vision scope you can get for the money....

Unfortunately, you won't find much in that price range that will do what you are wanting to do.

Like mentioned, I would keep saving until you can get a quality piece of equipment. Keep an eye out in the for sale forum here. Good deals come up from time to time on lightly used gear that could offer significant savings.

Aside from the actual NV optic, you are going to also need some type of illuminator to use with it.

Use this time to research and learn everything you can about the different choices available so when the time comes you can make an informed purchase.

IMHO, the absolute very best things someone getting into thermal should plan on getting are:

1: PVS-14 monocular

2. FLIR PS-32 Thermal Scanner

Possession and use of these two items will increase your night time hunting activities by a factor of 1,000X over using Red LED flashlights for hogs, coyotes, and other predators and vermin.

If you have not saved up for these two NV acccessories, then a RED LED flashlight like an Olight M-20 Crimson is good for everything out to 100 yards, which I have used successfully for years...

I have heard of guys getting a good PVS-4 tube and being happy with it. Me, I called the guys at TNVC and they took care of me.

hdfireman and SkyPup gave you some good advise. Unfortunately there is nothing cheap when you start getting into NV/thermal gear. But once you do it will completely change the way you hunt and you will truly enjoy it a lot. Wish I had more time to do it but most of time lately has been OCONUS.

The majority of my NV/thermal purchases has been with Hunter at ModArmory and I have gotten excellent service, prices and advise. I have met the men at Ident and they are currently working on a project for me and have been outstanding to work with. Look forward to meeting others in the future!!

Thanks for the advice I'm in the same boat, I think I'm settling on the m845 to start with
