I don't really know anything about AR's. But i put up a listing to trade my Luger for whatever and this guy has an AR he is willing to trade. Can you guys be a "AR translator" for me and tell me what these are? good, crap, does he sound knowledgeable, etc

Here's his response:

One is a Double Star lower retro build with an A-2 stock and upper with thriangle full length hand guards. 20" Shaw chrome lined heavy barrel, and DPMS lower parts kit. The other one is a CMMG lower with rock river parts kit. 16 " barrel with full length rails. It has a commercial multi position stock on it.

The first will not have an adjustable stock (it is the standard M16 butt stock), though getting one is easy. Double Star makes quality AR parts. I'm pretty sure the "thriangle" (probably supposed to be triangle) is your "standard" M16/M4 handguards. It also has a nice barrel, though 20" is a bit long unless you're wanting to use it as a long range gun. For anything CQB, or even "general battle rifle" use 20" is pretty long. I wouldn't use one that big for anything CQB related. With the handguards and long barrel this would be suitable as a "more" precision weapon.

The second is designed for closer battle with the shorter barrel (16" is as short as you can get without the ATF forms) and full length rail handguards for accessories (lights, lasers, vertical grips, etc). It also has the standard M4 adjustable stock.

Uh...what value do you place on your Luger is the first question you need to ask yourself!!

As for those two AR-15 rifles...both are "kit guns" that were put together by the current owner or some other person from stripped lower receivers with lower parts kits and complete uppers. I would figure that both could be built for around $800 each or so.

CMMG makes good quality stuff, as does RRA, DPMS, etc. I am not a big fan of DoubleStar parts as I have seen some that were out of spec. ER Shaw is a decent enough barrel for an AR, but I noticed he didn't tell you who made the 16" barrel.

Personally, if it were me, and I was considering parting with a good German Luger in even fair condition, I would hold out for a different setup than either of the two you have been offered.

I would have to agree with ORD; none of the major parts manufacturers cited are considered 'Tier 1,' so a lot will depend on:

1) The value you place on your Luger.
2) Your intended use(s) for the AR.

For a plinking/hunting/general use gun, probably acceptable; for serious social encounters, not so much. And then there's the unknown variable of who assembled the rifles and their skill level. Granted, ARs are pretty simple to assemble, but I'd still want to know if the monkey with the wrench knew WTF he was doing.

Though I agree with your premise, hold out for a better offer, I have never seen anything bad from Double Star. They have been making parts fora LONG time, as J&T Distributing, and have a good reputation for making great AR parts. I have a DS AR 15 (and the new DS 1911), and it has been top notch. No issues, no out of spec. Just a solid, reliable rifle at a reasonable cost.
