Range trip today to try out some handloads I had worked up found out I got troubles. Shooting a Tika T3lite .270WSM, mounted a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 in a set of Leuopold STD 2piece mounts and STD rings. Combo was good in the past on my .30-06. Not so on this one.
I had not sighted the rifle in since mounting the scope so when I got to the range I went to 50yds put the rifle on the bag removed the bolt, bore sighted it. Shot 1 round, moved 12 clicks up and 4 right, shoot again, I'm in the 10 ring but not as far right as I should have been. I figure something wrong on my end, I'm good enough till I figure out which load I want to use. Shooting 110gr VMax over 67.5 - 71.0 gr of Reloader 17, I could not get a group at 100 yds.
Half way through my 6 different loads I'm beginning to doubt myself, I feel like I'm chasing my tail across this target. I stand up and walk around and notice the very thin shiny black ring in front of the mounts
(the rifles been painted). I go ahead and finish my loads just to check velocity and for pressure problems. By the time I get done the black showing on the front ring amounts to appx 1/8", while the back has moved slightly less.
Should I just put more torque on the rings or look for a 1 piece base and some stouter rings? I already have tightened them as tight as I can stand to. If the first option any recommendations?
