I just had a 18" Kreiger 1 in 10 trist .308 barrel put on my old shot out winchester model 70. The reason I got it so short is so its not too long with the can on.I would like to be able to shoot it out to at least 800 yards.
Anyways I would like any recomendations for a good bullet powder combination. I have a bunch of 175gr SMK's but I was thinking about trying the 155 HPBT SJ SCENARs I was just woundering if a lighter bullet might be better out of a shorter barrel. I was planing on using Varget unless there might be a better powder for a shorter barrel.Any idea on what velosity to expect?
Thanks for any help.

Re: New 18" .308 barrel. Need som load recomendations

i have a 19 inch Rock tube that i used a 175 load for. Albeit it was a lighter side load, but i was crunched for time and didnt have the luxury of a load development. I took the load that gave me the best groups outta the 4 different charges i loaded up that day

My load was this
175 SMK
Win Brass
41.5grains IMR 4895
CCI BR2
2.800 OAL

it gave me something like 2475ish and did well out to about 600 yesterday. My come ups as computed by JBM were only like 10.3 mils to 1K, thats a light load so YMMV work it up and see.

When I had my factory 20" bbl I was running the 155 Scenars w/ 46.8gr Varget, FC Brass, CCI primers, 2.80-2.82" oal I recall, and was getting about 2750-2800 fps up at DSRPC. That was during summer though.

Of course, the barrel could barely do moa with any load/ammo so I upgraded to a 26" and am not going back.

I run them now at 47gr with waay better results.

For my Custom Barreled 20" model 7 I was running the 155 Nosler CC with IMR4895. I figured a lighter bullet with a faster powder would overcome most of the velocity loss from the shorter barrel. My load produced average 2930 fps. I was pretty surprised, and I always looked for pressure signs. My friend tried it in his 5R and got just over 3000 fps. Only about 80 fps loss for a four inch shorter barrel, seemed like a good trade off. Tried Reloader 10x with good results also.

The heavier bullets with the traditional slower powders seem to lose too much velocity.
