new 2 ar15 question

Re: new 2 ar15 question

The bolt carrier will work for both. However your bolt is a different story. You need to have a bolt thats matched for your barrel due to head spacing.

You really are better off having two complete uppers. I presume cost is a factor so I recommend eating Ramen noodles for however long you need to and save up for it.

1. 500 rounds of 69 gr will be good practice for you... a few months work maybe. Then you will need to buy more ammo.

2. An AR is really pushing it at 800 yards, especially if you have a 20" or shorter barrel. 600 yards is a more practical maximum for a 20" barrel. People shooting ARs at 800-1000 are at a disadvantage to other calibers...most try to minimize this by using 24"-26" barrels.

3. You will want a higher BC bullet than 69 gr at 800 yards. realistically, you need cartridges that exceed magazine length: 75gr A-max, 80gr A-Max, 80gr SMK, Berger VLDs, etc. You will be single loading all of these. That's what everyone shooting an AR at 800-1000 yards is doing.

+1 on all of this.

OP, I would consider looking at something with a 20" upper in 1/7.7 twist as it will shoot 69-77gr bullets. You may want to go with 1/7 for the 80's and up.

+1 Good advice

Re: new 2 ar15 question

The AR15 is headspaced almost entirely by correct barrel to upper assembly. If you installed the barrel yourself, you should check it or have someone check it immediately. Actually bolts are relatively interchangeable, if your barrel is installed properly, you are very likely to be ok on headspacing. Most of us running multiple uppers like to dedicate a separate bolt and carrier to each as the feeling is they wear to match each other. I am not sure how valid this is however. Again, if you put the upper together yourself, check the headspace before shooting it.

I dont know where people get this "stuff", certainly not at a 1000 yard rifle range.

Well, let me know if you ever get down to Phoenix and we can meet up for a 1K match at Ben Avery. Be sure to bring your 20" AR and your money. I'll just bring my 243WIN tubegun.

Re: new 2 ar15 question

I shoot service rifle, look at the winner circle at Perry's service rifle matches.

I've shot M14/M1As for over 30 years in HP and 1000 yard matches, but even this old dog learned they cant compete with the ARs now days.

Not saying I'm gonna make my Super Match M1A into a lamp, but if I'm gonna be serious about shooting service rifle at 1000 yards, I'll take my White Oak.
